McDonalds is in huge financial trouble today because it has finally been unable to increase its sales over the prior year. Nevermind the fact that it serves millions of hamburgers a year. Nevermind the fact that it has locations at pretty much every major intersection in America. Or that it is a huge employer (ok the wages aren’t great but it employs a lot of people). Or that it is selling more and making more money than a decade ago. It failed to grow, and thus it is in severe trouble. Our whole financial system is set up this way. Without growth, our debt based economy fails. Well guess what, I can only eat so many hamburgers in a year.
            Capitalism also prioritizes profits at the expense of everything (a disturbing result is that quality doesn’t matter). Make something that will last the length of its 12 to 36 month warranty and then have it fall apart. But because people have a short term time horizon, they think they are getting a bargain because it’s half the cost of a model that lasts 20 years.
            Also with the prioritization of profits you have big industry shutting down Detroit so they can save a few bucks on labor. Well, in my book labor is just as important as capital. But no one prioritizes labor, only capital.

            Prioritizing of profits isn’t necessarily a bad thing though. You should always strive for faster and cheaper methods of production. Why stay arkaik when your competitor is making more sales than you? Capitalism is what makes us better than the rest of the world. Capitalism creates wealth. The same wealth the looters depend so much on.
            Growth doesn’t always lead to inflation. Demand leads to inflation. Innovation, usually brought on by the idea of competition, helps to produce goods of higher quality at lower prices which we all want at the end of the day. It was innovation that allows us to make more food, make better houses, make better cars, etc.
            It was crony corporatism, when government and big business work together to fudge the market at the expense of the taxpayer & consumer, which screws us over.

In hindsight, when you see that the Soviet Union was also able to produce high quality products (they are not universally high quality, but for example even today they have the most advanced space tech in the world, and produce most items they need for internal usage) that maybe you don’t have to be absolutely as productive as possible at the expense of everything else.             When I was in college, I worked at a bank that used a command line system, no Windows. Soon after I was hired everything was switched over to Windows machines. They didn’t allow us to process transactions any faster. They did allow us to browse the internet on company time. Were we more productive with the new machines? Were we *less* productive?
            I agree capitalism has benefits. But the problem is when we start worshipping and holding capitalism holy. No one should live their life based on ideology.

To keep making things the way they used to be made means increasing prices. That turns off customers more times than not. If the currency unit were stable prices would be stable or trending down as productivity increased. Also regulation plays a role. Few industries lack regulation and can improve fast enough to beat inflation. One of these is consumer electronics.
            This crony system benefits the people at the top of the pyramid and government so that’s why we have it and why it won’t go away until everything crashes and burns.

            1) Logistics: Syrians can’t simply walk into our country. They have to cross an ocean first. This buys us time and stymies the tide.
