Back in the 1960s, Playboy magazine ran a campaign to encourage advertisers to buy space in the magazine. The campaign was entitled “What Sort of Man Reads Playboy” and it highlighted one aspect of its reader base every month. In this article, I take a look at some of the most popular articles on ROK to discern what sort of man reads ROK. It will also serve as a good reminder of the basic principles of masculinity.

The starting point for any self-improvement program is to focus on the physical. This is because the state of our physical body provides the foundation for how we feel. Without a good physical foundation, you will look terrible and your confidence will suffer. If you are fat and eat poorly, you will have lousy energy and not be able to achieve anything.

This is why articles on training have always been popular at ROK. The modern world has the side effect of making men soft. Spending nine hours a day working in a cube then going home to play video games is not life that nature intended for men. All men should be spending some part of their week exercising to counter act this effect.

But what type of exercise? ROK has been consistent in preaching the message of pumping iron. Lifting weights is the fastest way to get strong and to build an impressive physique. The emphasis has always been on building functional muscle. Whether you want strategies to lose weight or build strength, ROK has you covered.

If you’ve been following my writing here or at my blog, you know that I believe that we are entering a very uncertain time when civil unrest is becoming increasingly likely. Therefore, it is imperative that every man learn how to defend himself.
This message is not new to ROK readers. They are only interested in martial arts that provide practical self-defense benefits. ROK writer Jean-Batave Poqueliche has met this need with an outstanding series of articles that describe the most effective submissions, throws, leg techniques, and hand techniques.

But ROK readers know that while unarmed fighting is a necessary skill, it is only a part of what man needs to know to defend himself and his family. That’s why ROK has always carried articles on firearms. Most recently my colleague Luke Stranahan has guided readers on what to look for in a handgun and a rifle.

A man who has a realistic view of women

ROK readers love women, but they know that a woman can never be a man’s ultimate purpose. We have a realistic view of women. We don’t put them on a pedestal and imagine that they are pure, perfect creatures that are worthy of nothing but praise. On the other hand, we don’t make the opposite mistake of assuming that women are demons in human form whose only purpose in life is to divorce rape their husbands. The men who believe the latter often end up retreating from women entirely and embracing some form of MGTOWism.

Modern culture wants us to believe that women are smarter than men and that they have better values than men. Part of the argument for Hillary being elected president is that she is a woman, and that as a woman she is inherently more stable, competent, and peaceful than a male president. At the same time we are told to venerate women as superior beings, society also asks us to protect them as the weaker sex. For example, girls need to be fed a steady diet of “grrrl power” or their self-esteem will plummet. In short, modern women want to have their cake and eat it too.

If you are single, you’ll find solid “game” advice on ROK (check out Troy Francis’ continuing series of articles). But my position on game has always been is that if you do the the hard work of self-improvement, you’ll only need to know the basic principles of game to be successful. Woman are naturally attracted to successful men.

A man who is focused on success

We live at a time when all the rules have changed. In the not so distant past, the formula for success was simple: get good grades in high school, get into a good university, get a marketable degree, get a job at a large corporation, and climb the corporate ladder. While some can still take advantage of this path, it is closed off to most young men who are graduating now as more jobs are being outsourced or filled by cheaper immigrants.

The men who used to work in the so-called blue collar jobs have it even worse. Most of their jobs have been moved to foreign countries leaving thousands unemployed. The advice of our elite is worthless. Displaced workers are either told to go to college, which is increasingly a fool’s errand, or to move to follow a job. But what if the job was moved to Vietnam? Are we really going to expect American workers to learn Vietnamese and relocate their families?

ROK readers have been among the first to understand that the game is rigged. The first step to becoming successful is to realize that the economy is designed to make us perpetual consumers. Rejecting consumerism frees a man to focus on what is truly valuable. Saving money thus opens the door to financial freedom.

A man who who understands the system

One of the first things that struck me about ROK is the readers’ opinion of politics. Long before Donald Trump announced his candidacy, ROK readers were already aware of the fact that the conservative versus liberal divide in the country amounted to little more than kabuki theatre for the proles. In reality, conservatives have been a fake opposition all along. Their only purpose was to give the appearance of democracy.

ROK is one of the first places—maybe the first place—that pointed out that the real divide in the country is between globalism and nationalism. While this might be old news to ROK readers, it is still a truth that has not sunk into the consciousness of wide swaths of conservative movement. The people who cling to the outmoded dichotomy are now known as cuckservatives.

Finally, ROK is the one place that has proposed a realistic solution to the problems of the system in Patriarchal Nationalism.

Conclusion

Regardless of what happens in the US presidential election in November, there are going to be big changes in the future. ROK will remain in the forefront of those changes with advice that will allow our readers to flourish.

  3. There are very few of us left anymore and we are dwindling. ROK is a minority of men who have strong convictions and principles. Most men, young and old, are bowing to political correctness and allowing themselves to be brainwashed into this “masculinity and testosterone is evil” mentality. The men at ROK are different but we can spread the word and wisdom as long as we can. Even if we simply encourage each other, that’s more than enough for now. What happens to the world in the decades to come? I have some predictions:
    * Physically fit men will be shamed for their bodies and have to cover them to avoid ridicule from feminists and SJW’s
    * Characters like James Bond will be a thing of the past. Meanwhile, a gay Bond or woman Bond will take over. Characters that real men relate to won’t exist.
    * Guns will certainly be banned. If or when Hillary riggs her way into the White House then guns will be banned sooner than expected.
    * Men won’t be able to have an opinion on women at all. Unless they want to ruin their lives.
    Anyway, that’s my take on it. It’s grim but we have to face the facts. The road ahead is a rough one.

I too, have long ago concluded that the overriding social/political/economic struggle of our time, is the struggle between Globalism and Nationalism. One of the things I am struggling with, is the question of why do western societies seek to advantage females over males at every turn, in life. There have always been a small group of exceedingly wealthy and powerful, very ripe liver spotted old men, who can only feel alive by using their economic power to control the lives of younger men. The powerful old and ripe have always been fearful and jealous of the young and virile. Now, if they could manipulate the dynamics between younger males and females, that would give them another lever of control. This is just a theory, and I might go no where with it. But its at the very first stage of development. The theory in its basic form goes something like this. You condition the male population, starting at the family unit level, to have a S.I.M.P. mindset. You use the Gynarchy to control the males. The females are manipulated from behind the curtain, to perpetuate the insatiable consumption machine. Its just the beginning of a theory and I might ultimately go nowhere with it..

  6. When you look at “beach bod” pics of men and women from the 60’s and 70’s compared to even fit men and women today their body structure, fat concentration, and weight is completely different. The guy in the pic above is probably average for the day.     I’m general a small, tailored to slim fit in most stores. I found my dad’s old fraternity t-shirts in a box the other day. They were labeled medium but were smaller then most of my t-shirts. He went to college in the early 70’s. He told me the style was to wear tight shirts back then (much like it is now) but he also said he really didn’t work out. Just hit the gym once or twice a week to do a few free weight sets.
    Maybe it is all the processed foods, estrogen in the water, antibiotics in animals, etc. etc. but I really wonder if maybe the hippies are right on this one.

        2. My eating strategy has always been eat what I want but consume very little. I probably eat 1200-1500 calories a day. Even though I hit the gym 3-4 times a week I probably only burn 300-400 calories with my workout (usually a 20-30 run and some free weights). I might increase my caloric intake by a few hundred to compensate those days. Even with this I still have a few “problem areas” (yes that sounds like a woman) that I just can’t seem to get firm. I figure it is either genetics or a diet. Starting to think it is diet and crap food that is being pumped into all of us. Although every other person in my family carries far more weight in those areas then I do.

When I am cutting I am at 1200 calories but come winter when I am doing heavy weights and putting on muscle it is closer to 3200. I also don’t believe that your genetics have as much say as many people believe. Finding a good macro balance, seriously dedicating yourself and working yourself to the point of total exhaustion will change your body and make you the best you that you can be (even if it won’t make you Arnold or Michael Phelps). I would suggest picking a definitive goal and then working a plan around that. If you want help or advice feel free to ask.

        7. Don’t want to get too specific because you know this is the internet but I am around 5/9 to 5/10 and 130-135. I think I have a slightly lower metabolism then most do. Never got it “checked out” but any time I go above 2000 calories a day I start packing on the pounds.

          You might try intense weightlifting 6 days a week and bumping up the calories by 300 at a time and see how that works. Find an amount where you can put on muscle but aren’t getting fat.
          Unless you like your size, then keep doing what you’re doing.

        11. I tried putting on bulk but it really didn’t work for me. Even got a personal trainer for a few months. It seemed whenever I bumped up my caloric intact it went to fat instead of muscle. Again, maybe I was doing it wrong. I can get toned but can’t seem to get “buff” The best explanation I can come up with is my alcohol caloric intake is too high (2-3 hard alcohol drinks a night around 300 calories). Apparently that messes with muscle building. Anyway, if I did pack on the muscle I would probably have to buy all new clothes and that would be a 5K+ investment (have to wear suits for work).

Your intake is spot on for a sedentary woman, but ultimately everyone is unique. If your energy levels are good and your blood work is good and your weight is good, you’re consuming enough calories.   20. If anything, this site is a godsend. I have always been a practitioner of Irish democracy. I ignore the ridiculous rules that the SJWs try to force down our throats. I get away with it because I work for a small company, and I produce. Plus, our HR woman mainly concerns herself with handling our benefits, and restocking supplies. She is also hot and politically correct, so that is a bonus.
    What ROK has done for me is helped me get back on track with advice on diet and exercise. I have a long way to go, but the articles on weight training and excercise have helped me drop six inches from my waistline, and has made me feel better.
    Why did I start? Because of fat shaming. Take it from a not-so-fat guy. Shaming works! You need to be forced to look in a mirror to take action! Then you need to read the fitness articles which are written in an encouraging matter. As you move towards your goal, you will get encouragement. You will want to push harder.
