Fewer than one in five men who suffer a cardiac arrest during sex survive, according to new research.
This is because their partner does not know how to perform a simple, life saving technique, say scientists.
It underlines the importance of teaching CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to the general population, they warned.
Sex is known to trigger a sudden cardiac arrest and this causes the heart to suddenly stop beating. It usually occurs without warning.
The 13-year study of more than 4,500 sudden cardiac arrests (SCAs) in Portland, Oregon, found only a third of cases that occurred during intercourse received ‘bystander CPR’.
It was determined this accounted for the less than 20 per cent of patients who survived to hospital discharge.
Senior study author Dr Sumeet Chugh, associate director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, Los Angeles, said: ‘Even though SCA during sexual activity was witnessed by a partner, bystander CPR was performed in only one third of the cases.
‘These findings highlight the importance of continued efforts to educate the public on the importance of bystander CPR for SCA, irrespective of the circumstance.’
Doubles chance of survival
The British Heart Foundation says about 10,000 people die in the UK each year because bystanders do not know how to do CPR if they see someone having a cardiac arrest.
CPR involves giving regular chest compressions to make the heart pump blood around the body. It has been found to double the chance of survival.
Dr Chugh and colleagues showed although the overall risk of having a cardiac arrest during sex is low, death rates are high.
Only a small percentage of cases are related to sexual activity, but survival remains low.
The study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology said this was despite a partner being present.
Sex triggers heart attacks
It results in around 350,000 deaths annually in the US, and about 100,000 in the UK. It is known sex may trigger cardiac arrests.
So the researchers looked at the community-based Oregon Sudden Unexpected Death Study (Oregon SUDS) database from 2002 to 2015 to discover their frequency during or within an hour after sex among over 18s.
All reported cases were based on emergency medical service reports containing detailed information regarding their cause.
In total, the researchers identified 4,557 during the study period, of which 34 (0.7%) were linked to sexual activity.
On average these patients were more likely to be male, middle aged, African-American and have a history of cardiovascular disease, with a majority taking medication for it.
Overall, the researchers said they found a relatively low burden of cardiac arrest in relation to sex.
Most cases were men with a previous history of cardiovascular disease. The researchers also noted some cases after sex may also involve medications, stimulants and alcohol use.

Easy solution: teach women how to perform CPR, right after she signs your sexual consent form. It can be part of a dystopian pre-sex checklist.

Workout can help, but no necesarilly prevent. A good rule of thumb is to keep the cholesterol down to 150. Cutting from animal protein helps.

Yeah, I don’t know how to perform a CPR (way too HARD for my sweet little head to get it) but I know how to suck cocks (I have my methods that very few women have) which is one of the best (and useful) things someone should know in their lives. And even if they do know CPR, there’s also the chance that they’ll feign knowledge. They’ll have a few easy explanations available for the authorities afterwards.
No, it’s ‘women don’t WANT to know how to perform CPR.’ There are good reasons for this.
1. CPR is hard work. Most women do their best to avoid hard work.
2. Learning CPR is a sign of a responsible adult. Responsibility is to women as garlic is to vampires. HISS!
3. They could be going through the guy’s wallet instead. Look after yourself first, grrl!

I’m a paramedic so I went and looked up the sexual assault worry for decreased CPR on woman because I was curious. I found multiple articles on the issue. My favorite part is in various articles they all have the same claim – if you are doing it right you don’t need to touch a woman’s boobs trying to put the blame on men if they somehow do.
I have done A LOT of CPR and I will say this is just not true. I have touched a shit ton of woman’s breasts to do proper CPR. Not every time but enough that I can see why it is a concern to the layman. I’ve had some chests where my hands fit in such a way to be comfortable that my fingers are on top of their nipples the whole time.
The reality is that early CPR saves lives. Not the magic defibrillator box that every mom wants in the school, library, store, etc. That works in a very subset of cardiac arrests which is NOT most of them that the average person is likely to encounter.
Recent studies have shown that pumping the chest but skipping the mouth to mouth part also works about as well. There appears to be enough left over oxygen in the body to keep the brain alive until help arrives as long as the pump (the heart) is moving.
Now this is just my personal experience – I have asked why people did not do CPR and the #1 reason isn’t that someone might touch a boob but that they don’t want to do mouth to mouth – who the fuck wants to lock lips with a stranger who might puke while you are doing it? Not me that’s for sure.
AEDs and other such devices or methods act marginally against sudden cardiac death. Even CPR is only good to keep the blood flow for a few minutes. Now trusting a woman to put those marginal chances on your side during an unfortunate event? Not a chance, you’re as good as dead.
Number one, a heart attack is not the same as sudden cardiac arrest. Number two, the story that said sex can cause SCA is fake news anyway. So your title is misleading and your whole article is pointless.

All females are worse than useless in a medical emergency situation. 95% of them will panic and go hysterical if you drop from a cardiac arrest. The best she can manage is dialing 911 and screaming incoherently at the dispatcher.
Last year we responded to a self inflicted gsw, where a young guy was showing off his pistol collection to a gal he brought home from the bar. She asked if a pistol is loaded. He drops the magazine, puts the barrel to his temple, says “You Don’t trust me?”, and sends the round he neglected to clear from the chamber through his temple. Fire, police, and ems arrive moments later, package and transport the dude to the ER where he is declared deaf. Next shift we visit with one of the Police officers who responded that night. He told us that he took a statement from the gal who witnessed the self inflicted gsw. She stated that when he shot himself in the head, she stood there in shock for a few minutes then called 911. After ending the call she stood there and watched him bleed and twitch on the floor. She didn’t know what to do so she went upstairs to wait for the first responders.
I remember passing a weeping female when we made our way into that house.
She didn’t even attempt to render aid.
When shit gets real, the vast majority of women are useless.

Heart attack is caused by insufficient perfusion of the myocardium. This is generally caused by ischemia in the coronary arteries. CPR can only help in the case of a cardiac arrest, ie when the heart is not working. The two conditions are not the same.
