In 27 years from now, almost a quarter of the global population will be obese, researchers said Wednesday, warning of the mounting medical bill.

If current trends continue, 22 percent of people in the world will be obese by 2045, up from 14 percent last year, according to research presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Vienna.

One in eight people, up from one in 11, will have type 2 diabetes — a form of the disease that generally hits in adulthood as a result of being overweight.

“These numbers underline the staggering challenge the world will face in the future in terms of numbers of people who are obese, or have type 2 diabetes, or both,” said researcher Alan Moses of Danish healthcare company Novo Nordisk’s research and development department.

“As well as the medical challenges these people will face, the costs to countries’ health systems will be enormous,” he added.

In the United States, the researchers found obesity will increase from 39 percent of the population in 2017 to 55 percent in 2045, and diabetes from 14 percent to 18 percent.

In Britain, the proportion will swell from 32 percent to 48 percent, with the incidence of diabetes rising from 10.2 percent to 12.6 percent.

Already, health systems are spending “huge sums just to treat diabetes,” the researchers said in a statement.

Moses and a team analysed population data for all countries in the world, obtained from a World Health Organization database.

They divided the population of each country into age groups, and further into body mass index (BMI) categories, and looked at trends to make projections.

BMI is a ratio of height to weight used to divide people into low- to high-risk categories for developing heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.

A person with a BMI of 25 or more is considered overweight, and 30 or higher obese.

A healthy BMI ranges from 18.5 to 24.9.

The researchers said turning the tide on obesity would require “aggressive and coordinated action”.

“Each country is different based on unique genetic, social and environmental conditions which is why there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach that will work,” Moses said.

“Individual countries must work on the best strategy for them.”

The research results have not yet been published in a scientific journal but were peer reviewed for selection at the congress.

A global survey in 2016 said the ratio of obese adults had more than doubled in the 40 years since 1975.

Of about five billion adults alive in 2014, 641 million were obese, it found.

      1. I went into a church once and there was some meeting going on in the community room. I asked what the meeting was about and they said it was overeaters anonymous. It was mostly single looking fat white women and two or three black women all with decent newer cars and SUVs parked outside. The black fatties kind of stick out with the fat ass that kind of protrudes backwards like Brazil, somewhat resembling a profile of the South American continent. Most attendees had the common ‘pear’ shape with the gut that looks like an unrepaired hernia. Then some white women had what I describe as a ‘tick’ shape where they look like a fat tick bloated full of blood in the mid torseau and with narrower spindly legs that go down. They really do look like a big tick. The skin quality is often poor on the ‘tick’ body type white women which points to liver malfunction with fatty liver disease most likely.
        After the women left the church, I overheard a few of the cows in the parking lot saying “Let’s do the usual tonight.” It was a get together at TGIFridays. Lolol. These fatsos flip flop. Back and forth. Back and forth. They binge eat and then go to overeaters anonymous and then repeat. It boggles the mind. I always wondered how people can waste so much time and resources yo-yoing between contradictory extremes. It seems like undue stress on the mind and body.
        It kind of brings to mind other contradictory extremes like in college when I knew fraternity guys who would binge drink like crazy at a party and then cram for exams the next day. I never knew how they could do that. Booze always wiped out my ability to study like all shit. I could open girls at a club with a little booze sure, but never study. Study requires caffeine and protein.

Petroleum production rates will fall precipitously (peak oil), and petroleum production controls almost everything in the economy. Unsustainable debt, unfunded public liabilities, cultural, moral, and ecological degradation will also contribute to the collapse.
        Twenty-five years from now – I think most folks will be thinner, poorer, harder working, and hopefully better off spiritually, mentally, and physically. A lot of people will probably did during the greater Depression that is coming.

  2. As you get older your metabolism will slow down. Many people do not adjust their diets and become more obese every day/month/year. I would recommend cutting out all bread, white potatoes and pasta from your diet. You will immediately begin to look and feel better. I would pick one day to eat whatever you want, i.e., “cheat day”. If you lift hard on the morning of your “cheat day”, you will actually feel huge the day after because of all those carbs you ingested. For the most part, obesity is caused by laziness and gluttony. It really is that simple.

      By age 30, unfortunately people really need to completely cut out sodas, have a daily 20-30 minute exercise routine, and limit fast food and beer/wine consumption to just one day a week. It’s really the only way to maintain a decent appearance as you get older.

    2. Good tips. The most effective way to avoid obesity is to not become obese in the first place. Your body does not rid itself of excess fat cells when you lose weight – they only shrink but are still present. So as you get fatter and fatter your body produces more and more fat cells which means it’s much much easier to balloon up to 300 pounds from 180 than it is to go to 300 from 180 the first time around. So again, the most effective way to fight obesity is to not become a 300 pound tub of lard in the first place. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

    2. Neal, I live in Kansas City. The local staples of barbecued fatty meats and biscuits and gravy is nearly as bad as heroin or crack cocaine. This town is coronary and diabetes central. The number of obese people you see daily here is absolutely astonishing . I’ll be out making sales calls on manufacturers for my day job in industrial parks in the afternoon, and literally HALF of the newer commercial buildings are vacant, yet a drive by the all-you-can eat Chinese buffet, or the Old Country Buffet, is mind numbing. Parking lots are full, and obese people are going in and out of theses places by the dozens, let alone standing in lines waiting to enter. I never go near these places, but out of curiousity, I stopped to look in the windows one day, and I saw dozens of obese families (men, women, children) balancing 2-3 plates on both arms as they moved up and down the many food lines. So why exactly are we beating up, shutting down, or giving away manufacturing jobs and businesses, but these gluttonous enabling and non-wealth generating places are packed full to the rafters?? What’s even worse is that obese people are becoming yet another protected class. What use to be frowned upon, is now becoming celebrated and accepted. The Nuremberg defense I grow weary of is it’s “hereditary “, or its “glandular”, or its “on the inside that matters”. No, it’s gluttony, and gluttony is a sin. It’s also sloth, and sloth is a sin. Let’s not sugar coat it, let’s call it what it is.

When I was a kid, there were older members of my extended family who were fat (though not cripplingly obese) and they lived mainly on “farm” foods (since they lived on or close to farms) – some sugar – but they were also rather keen on the fattier cuts of meat, cheese and cream. Disliking vegetables was popular even when my grandparents were kids :). They also didn’t have cars so had to walk everywhere – more calories were burned.
          If you eat too many pork chops you will still get fat, but the point is you are more likely to feel satiated eating pork chops than you are doughnuts.

  8. This has been on my mind. Modernity has provided incredible benefits for mankind. Among many other things chasing down game or cultivating crops to eat isn’t a necessity for individuals. As follows the amount of calories we require to survive is not the same as our bodies still signal us to consume. We see surplus of food, instinct says load up because in the past this was likely followed by drought and seasons (winter), which means scarcity. You see we’re out of balance. I think managing food today with our relaxed lives causes a great deal of inner conflict and even depression for many people. Same thing goes for sex. Partners and the conditions for sex we’re not as common as today. Sex is survival so like food we are compelled load up. But at 7 billion people is it as necessary? Like food I think sex causes a lot of inner conflict for both men and women. It feels like we need to reconfigure to our new caloritic and sexual needs and indulging them is clearly not the way. Funny, the liberals want to indulge.

  10. The human body never ceases to amaze me. The amount of self-abuse the body can endure is simply astounding. Morbid obesity creates enormous stresses on the body, yet the body manages to acclimate to the condition, but chronic illness is the result and is often fatal. The pancreas is overworked to the point of nearly shutting down (resulting in Type 2 diabetes and related complications), the cardiovascular system is severely strained (heart disease, stroke), muscles deteriorate, kidneys slowly degrade (resulting in dialysis treatment or a transplant), etc. Ask any doctor and they’ll tell you it’s a horror show resulting from a shitty diet and lifestyle devoid of any semblance of physical activity.
    Yet these waddling bags of blubber blame their condition on genetics, their childhood, their lack of willpower (there may be some truth there), poverty, or a myriad of other lame excuses. Responsibility and accountability for their choices eludes them. They may lie to themselves, their friends, and their family but they can’t lie to their body.

Obesity and vastly changing environmental factors (changing food, chemical aerosol spraying, prescription drugs) also changes the shape of the face as well…Almost everybody I see today in the US has a short, wide face (especially those in low income, minority areas, or rural low-middle class white regions).
      If we went back over 20 years ago, most people had a more normal facial (a little more narrower, oval, and longer) appearance. About the only people that were obese more then 25 years ago were blacks and Mexicans…Some whites in Alabama and Mississippi, but overall pretty low.

      1. The short, wide faceshape (primarily among the obese) is seen among 65% or more of Americans because feminists go after lower quality, lower IQ men that was not approved by the Dad.
        The Dolph Lundgren (or Patrick Swayze look in US) or Nordic faceshape was seen much more often 25-30 years ago or more because women picked better quality men before 1970.

With the discussion being focused around the obesity crisis I’ve noticed that there’s a lot of talk about it and in particular talking about the overeating aspects of it but I haven’t yet seen anybody offer an alternative or strategy in order to prevent obesity with the current Food Supplies. I thought that I would share my strategies for not joining the legions of the obese. so here’s a couple of my personal strategies. One, I avoid the highly processed foods and large sources of sugar especially high fructose corn syrup and other processed sugars. This eliminates most of the complex carbohydrates that come from the major grains in our diets namely soy corn and wheat. Two, I focus on eating as much fresh meats vegetables what I term as Whole Foods that are less processed other than cooking and adding my own spices in order to keep them as close to original as possible while eating as much as I possibly can fresh raw vegetables and fruits. Three, I try to drink as much filtered water or bottled water as possible for those few added chemicals to it as I can get and also use that same uncontaminated water for making teas. Four, and this last strategy that I share is the thing that we’re I believe 99.9% of diets fail because it reflects the lack of self-control and that is portion size because you can have all of the Whole Foods as I turned them but if you just cannot stop yourself from eating and overeating them you’re still going to run into the same problem. I will eat at the regular meal times only enough until I feel comfortable and not to the point of feeling stuffed or full if that makes sense. and instead of eating three more traditional meals I space all of the foods that I eat during the day out across the whole day so that I don’t have the wild blood sugar swings from trying to digest big meals instead I digest smaller amounts across the entire spectrum of the day and that also allows me to drink more water with them instead of other kinds of drinks. and lastly I do not avoid complex proteins or fats except for the artificial man-made fats, and I do not consume any foods that are labeled low-fat skim or fat free especially ones that processed and or may be labeled as diet foods. mMy weight and my cholesterol levels have remained pretty much static in accepted healthy zones and unchanging even as I age. I have a very active lifestyle outside of my regular job and work two physically intensive side jobs in construction, so when I’m not in the gym after my primary job I am usually getting a good full body muscular workout and cardio workout from the other my other employment. I quit smoking in 1996 after 13 years and only have an occasional alcoholic drink maybe once every two weeks or so.

      I put on weight because of beer and wine coolers.
      Can’t live without 1 liter of those (5-7% alcohol) a day.

I also think that there is another facet of the obesity topic that may be missed being addressed, and that is with the explosion in food availability there’s also been a corresponding explosion of digestive disorders and diseases such as Celiac’s disease, food allergies, colitis irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes and other organ dusfunction diseases and of course the rising fatal cancers related to the digestive system like stomach and colon cancers, among others. Many of these diseases also go hand in hand with the obese and morbidly obese conditions. i just thought i would point that out.

    Some of them certainly do overeat.
    But consider that in the West most people are eating the SAME diet.
    There are trivial exceptions (vegans, low carbers, fad dieters etc)
    But for the most part people are all eating an identical diet.
    Except a certain portion get obese, some just get a little over weight, and some stay a healthy weight.
    Obesity is a hormonal issue, not a caloric surplus problem.
    Calories are abstract measurements–not tangible nutrients you can isolate from food. You could meet ur daily caloric needs by eating sugar alone, but that wouldn’t be a smart diet.
    That people get obese is because the food itself causes an endocrine disruption in the system. It’s not the quantity of food in question; that’s just industry propaganda to make you believe the food itself is fine, it’s just the quantity people are choosing which is at fault. Total bs.
    It’s the QUALITY of the food which is at fault.
    Our diets are lacking in basic minerals, cofactors, enzymes, micro nutrients, and vitamins that are essential to a healthy metabolism.
    Just coz ur not fat doesn’t mean ur ok.
    Ur body is just dealing with the deficiencies in other ways.
    Some people get obese, some stay thin and develop over degenerative diseases.

      You’re wrong, while everyone has the same diet, the fatties eat and drink much more of it. Sit and watch a fat person for 15 minutes, you’ll be surprised how much snack food and soft drinks they manage to cram in their mouth. Not to mention at normal mealtimes their plates will have 2-3x the food of a slim person.

          Usually the thin are hyperactive, you can reproduce this effect yourself with Meth/amphetamines. A lot of ‘sexy’ dancers take amphetamines so they can stay thin and dance all night. In some countries you can go to the doctors and they will inject you amphetamines for an almost instant weight loss, lived with a girl that used to do this, made her jumpy as hell, but the weight was off in a week.

        2. John, consider the Atkins diet where you are eating the most caloric dense foods (animal fats and proteins) and yet you can still lose weight.
          Low carb diets totally debunk the calories 8n/calories out myth of metabolism.
          Some argue that low carb diets work because you are still consuming less calories despite the nature of the food you’re eating. But that is laughable to anyone who has seriously tried low carb diets.
          I tried Atkins for 2 months and I was easily exceeding my daily calorie recommendations in a single meal (tones of pork fat, cream, cheese, meat…) and yet still losing weight.
          I don’t think it’s an ideal diet, but it certainly proves the calories in/out hypothesis a simplistic misestimation of human metabolism.

    2. As someone who studied nutrition and experienced all sort of diets for the past 15 years…congrats for this comment. Yes, you know what you’re talking about. I eat at least 8lbs of fruit each day, I have no idea how many calories are in there, too many to count anyways. :))) I keep saying that not all calories are created equal…usually people are very stuborn on their diet habits, you really annoy them if you point the issues, so I’ve learned that is best not to say anything at all, unless they ask you for advice.

      1. Most Americans eat mostly addictive, processed food. They eat it mindlessly, too. Some of us decide to get smart with food and cooking, most don’t. That’s right, for health we have to cook and we know it…grassfed meats, real produce, healthy oils and seasonings. I keep my Keto-Wheatbelly-Atkins cook real food at home diet to myself. Why not? No one is listening anyway. Seems like everyone is a diabetic anymore. This is insane. I guess for those of us who got smart, we can just continue to do our best. As a free country, I suppose people have a right to eat what they want, but I’m getting tired of paying for health insurance at work that I never use, while the fatties are using it up. If it wasn’t such good asset protection in case I got hit by a bus, I would quit the health insurance. Insurance doesn’t pay for the really good functional medicine doctors, so here I am paying my few bills on my own. Oh, like thermograms, bhrt, and REAL food and supplement advice that works. I suppose worth every penny. Funny, when I was a teen, looked at my mother’s 1951 catholic girls high school year book, and I was glad I didn’t need to dress like that. Pulled out the same book recently…shocking. There were no fat girls, no fat nuns, no fat archbishop. ZERO. We all know it, bunch of dumb Americans who did it to themselves is it.

      Yes we do need to eat quality food, but everyone who is overweight is overweight from too many calories. There is no over reason: you cannot change the laws of physics.

        As I said; calories are abstractions–not physical entities you can isolate from your food. Your body doesn’t deal in calories, nor count them. It deals in nutrients and mobilizes a wide range of enzymes, metabolic pathways, and hormones to deal with these nutrients.
        The quality and state of a nutrient has a huge impact on how your body deals with it, the same way eating a handful of poppy seeds is going to be very different from injecting heroin straight into your veins.
        2000 calories of pure sugar is going to affect you very differently from 2000 calories of fish.
        Don’t believe me, try each out separately for a month each and get back to me.

  22. Timely article, as My daughter’s 5th grade elementary class had a “graduation” ceremony just the other day. There were probably 200 parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles etc in the audience along with numerous teachers/administrators/principals – all of whom were female of course – and I bet there weren’t 5 decently-proportional attractive women in the entire room. It’s really getting bad. Almost every last one of these people, women and men alike, was a fat slob and was dressed like people of Walmart. Practically No dignity at all anymore at being seen in public looking like a pauper or like they were at a corner bar. There was one young attractive teacher that stood out like a beacon though, as she was in-shape, attractive, feminine and professionally yet modestly dressed. If this little social event is any indication, True attractiveness is down to only a couple people out of every hundred.

    1. This people are manipulated. They not taught true nutrition. I had to learn myself, as well. Being vegetarian seems to be it, but some fish added to the equation might be ok. This comes from my 15 years experience. Most hate or love when they hear this, everyone has very strong opinions on what they think it is right to eat, but very few have the health arguments at hand in the same time.

      1. Vegetarians are mentally ill, lots of recent studies to confirm this correlation, they aren’t sure if it’s being vegetarian that makes a person mentally ill, or it’s mental illness leading to an eating disorder.
        I’d rather be fat than insane.

  23. I read somewhere 8 years ago in an interview with various doctors that everyone of their patients has very low to almost no Vitamin D levels…They said the last time they could detect normal vitamin D levels was back in 1999.
    The ramifications of having low Vitamin D levels is vast. It regulates your melatonin levels (so you can sleep), decreases obesity, depression, heart problems, it helps prevent erectile dysfunction, and helps prevent many types of cancers.

    1. I say 50% or more of bad Anglo-country women attitudes are directly attributable to large proportions (majority?) of fat single women. This skews the whole dating market to senses of desperation for men and entitlement for women. Add the media influence of you know who, and it is an outright disaster.

  27. The Wheat plant was changed in America in the 70’s to a crappy, hi-yield, hunger-inducing wheat. Palm oil replaced by rapeseed oil, now called Canola oil, in the 70’s. Corn syrup popularized in the 70’s. Aspartame launched late 70’s. Etc Etc etc……

  30. In Venezuela, due to the ongoing financial problems, the average person has lost about 19 lbs. America will suffer the same fate in the coming years, my guess will be in the next decade or so.
    While in the meantime that fatness is real. While it takes many men out of the dating pool it takes about as many women out too. My guess is that those prophecies won’t come to pass about the world being one-quarter obese by 2045. There’s no way they can keep the system going that long.

  31. CinderElla: Buffets are low cost/high profit. You have to eat 8 to 10 plates of high cost food (protein) before the buffet starts to lose money. Most people go for low cost food (carbs). The buffets are even manipulated to push the low cost food on you. You can find videos on YouTube of people trying to beat the buffets and how they arrange food to prevent it. People think they’re getting a dael but most likely aren’t.

  32. I get that some of it is genetics vs. modern Western diet, but these day’s I also see why the concept of “shame” needs to make a comeback.

    I detect some un-diagnosed form of mental illness in up to 75% of the obese people I come across; they exist in similar numbers within my extended family. They seem to inhabit a completely different wavelength in life, and I often find myself callously staring right *through* them as if they weren’t even there — especially the women. Instant “next” for the young single ones. It’s a cruel instinct of mine (to not recognize their full humanity), but I confess I’m not seeing the problem in relegating the undisciplined, sloppy over-eaters of this world to their own crowded, low box in the dominance hierarchy. And subtly remind them of it. Even in the poor, fatness reeks of the luxury of sloth. At least TRY to get in shape, fools, and slow down this disgusting diabetes epidemic.

    1. Fat shaming is pointless without workable dietary pointers. We need people to identify what is really causing their weight gain and preventing their weight loss e.g. ‘healthy’ foods, the wrong food preparation, not enough ‘unhealthy’ food, or diets which can’t be maintained permanently e.g. Calorie Counting is pseudo-Science, because digestion and metabolism is far more complex, with a lot more variables that food combustion.

  34. We are not eating our natural Paleo diet of 100’s of different Greens, various roots/tuber, and seafood, so we are paying for it! Blue Zone areas are just where people eat better, including food preparation.
    It’s in all in “The Plant Paradox” book; it’s the dark side of the unnatural and skewed plenty of Agriculture, an especially bad since it became a mechanised corporate industry, especially for modern grains, legumes, fruits, and animal Protein production.
    Excessive fast carbs like all grain products, sugars, fruit juice (Fructose water), and milk sugar makes the body to think it is end-of-Summer fruit-season all the time, so triggers it to put on fat for expected winter scarity; this can also cause killer genes to activate, thus ‘modern diseases’ (Ancient Egyption got Arthritis from grain consumption),so breed/die earlier to fee up resources for the young.
    This doesn’t even cover the damage caused by Lectins (anti-grazing poisons) which we haven’t evolved adequate defenses for yet, given the evolutionary-timescale very-recent invention of agriculture e.g. for grains (grasses), legumes, and alien Nightshades.

  35. This is no longer an Anglo country problem. When I first went overseas in 2003, all the chicks were in perfect shape. Apparently, a young twenty-something person is natural to be perfectly healthy.
    Now, I return to those countries and there are fat asses. Not as bad as the USA; it’s moved on since 2003, but the gap is narrowing. The fat assery of say China or Japan is at USA levels c.a. 1995 and closing, Italy c.a. 2005, Columbia 2003, etc.
