What is the meaning of life? Whether you are naturally curious or just going through a midlife crisis, this is a question every last one of us struggles with at one point or another in our lifetime. Some people even claim to have the answers… beyond the increasingly common answer of 42.
Is finding the meaning of life a worthwhile pursuit? Or should we just sit back and enjoy the ride? In this article, I hope to shed some light on this question.
Is Finding The Meaning Of Life The Meaning Of Life?
Of all people only those are at leisure who make time for philosophy, only those are really alive – Seneca
Life seems pretty simple, right? Go to school, get a good job, find a partner, settle down, have kids, retire. Oh and don’t forget to try and have some fun somewhere along the way. Is it fair to assume that the entire process of life is so simple?
I’ve been obsessed with trying to find answers to the meaning of life. It is both a fascinating and frustrating process…
Trying to find the meaning of life feels like chasing a rainbow.
On one hand, it is exciting holding on to the hope that you are few strides away from a pot of gold. However, on the other hand, every time you get to the rainbow’s end, you realize the rainbow actually ends in a different place.
To understand the meaning of life, one must study both the spiritual and physical nature of reality.
The seeker of meaning will undoubtedly find himself overwhelmed with the laws of physics, mathematics, and the seemingly infinite expanse of the universe. In equally mind-numbing contrast, he will begin to contemplate the chemical composition that composes life on a molecular level, leaving each being a universe of its own.
Then, the seeker will find equally undeviating spiritual laws that govern life such as the law of karma (also known as cause and effect), the law of attraction, the law of giving and receiving, and the laws of change and impermanence.
As we grow wiser in our understanding of life’s complexity, we feel like we know less than we did in our ignorance.
True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us – Socrates
However, the one thing I have personally managed to grasp is that trying to find the meaning of life will, not ironically, give your life meaning and a serious sense of purpose along the way.
I Found It!
Let’s say that I found the meaning of life…
There is no possible way that I could share it with you.
Everyone has a different experience of life, set of beliefs, thinking patterns, primary focuses, and opportunities. We were raised by different parents, in different locations, and spent our entire lives surrounded by different people with a multitude of different opinions.
It is this constant input and interpretation of that input which makes up who we believe we are and how we think about life.
Due to the vast differences in the makeup of our psyche, the words I would attempt to convey my understanding through would either be an interesting idea, seemingly false, or sheer lunacy.
Furthermore, as a believer in the grand Creator, I believe we all have a different mission to complete in this period of existence.
Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life; everyone must carry out a concrete assignment that demands fulfillment. Therein he cannot be replaced, nor can his life be repeated. Thus, everyone’s task is unique as is his specific opportunity to implement it.” – Viktor E Frankl
Therefore, if I found the meaning of life, would it be true to you at all? Since I can’t tell you the meaning of life—even if I understood it—it is crucial that you pursue it through your own eyes of understanding.
When You Find It…
Now, although the ultimate, underlying, reality of existence may take decades to find, if we are lucky enough to find it at all, finding your life’s purpose won’t take more than a few months of diligence.
Take some time to think lofty and noble thoughts rather than focusing on girls and what you are going to do next Friday night with the boys.
Spend a bit of time contemplating high ideals and, just as surely as you’d get stuck in traffic in rush hour, you will find previously unknown purpose in life.
From here, the way you live your life will be forever altered.
When your life has true meaning, the things you chased while living in ignorance will no longer be of any desire to you… Ignorance is not bliss, ignorance causes unnecessary suffering through emotional and psychological ineptitude.
As your personal values align with your understood purpose in life, your actions and desires begin to align with your values. And when your actions and values align, you become a creative force capable of taking destiny into your own hands.
Pain becomes an opportunity for growth. Setbacks become challenges to overcome and tests of character strength. From here, personal growth and emotional transcendence are inevitable.
In Conclusion
By focusing on the meaning of life, you will naturally hit strides of success in your relationships, business, spiritual pursuits, and every other area one might otherwise give massive focus.
Your unruly emotions will become tame, getting out of bed in the morning will become an opportunity, and disciplined, dutiful, ambition will become your default state.
With a simple shift of how you use your mental energy, you can transcend any incompetence blocking your personal potential and become the shaper of your own destiny.

Conan breaks it down:
Meaning of life = Beer and hookers.
End of.
I guess you have no childten John?
5 so far, that’s where beer and hookers took me.
That makes them half-Jew, half-hooker, assuming they’re yours.
Spoken like an American degenerate, or a J EW.
The real meaning of life is Heritage- ones roots, establishing, creating a legacy of sons, and his Blood or race. At the end of the day, that is all that matters. Everything else changes or can change, like religion. It is transitory. I can convert to a Muslim, Buddhist, Jew or Christian tomorrow. But your blood and heritage can not nor will not, ever change.
Serving mankind and making the world a better and safer place is the next goal for individual men.
Let me save you all a lot of time and philosophical navel-gazing.
NO!
The only way to know the meaning of life, is to know the meaning of DEATH. Since no one can return from death (Sorry Christians and others, your messiahs and prophets did’t return from the dead), then you can’t possibly know the meaning of life.
Yes, some will say that some have had near-death experiences. However, compare those experiences to the amazingly similar experiences of those who’ve tripped on DMT — the chemical that floods the brain at the time of clinical death. Who can say anything reported from near death trekkers is anything more than an interrupted DMT trip?
Death is a part of life. Not knowing it means we can only partially know life. Now, if there’s any philosophical bent towards living life from the position of knowing life as fully as a human can know life, Seneca is correct. I would add, carpe diem, and “Do not worry about tomorrow , for each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Jesus).
As a man matures, he will naturally tune into the meaning of life. A man can be told, taught and admonished about life’s meaning, and how to best life it. However, until experienced, such lessons are rarely internalized. So get out there and live life. Worry not what its meaning is.
Shut your neck bearded face you preening, Hitchens-Dawkins parroting basement dweller.
“Sorry Christians and others, your messiahs and prophets did’t return from the dead)”
Proof?
Here’s something about near death experiences for those who need more proof: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/life-after-death-largest-ever-study-provides-evidence-that-out-of-body-and-near-death-experiences-9780195.html
Teacher Li Hongzhi has something to say about the meaning of life (for starters, have a look at the book Zhuan Falun): http://www.falundafa.org/
It is to fight the feminist that is hell bent on destroying family values in Western civilization.
The meaning of life is self actualization. All I want is a quiet life, I want to go to work make money and be left alone. No kids or wife I desire in life.
If you really feel that way you are very lucky.
Here is the meaning of life:
It is to…
…shit! 1% battery! Brb…
classic..well done!
the meaning from an evolutionary perspective is to have the most children
that’s purpose, not meaning.
Then there is no greater overall meaning to it.
Historically tribal leaders who led their genetic brethren to prosperity also pushed their own genetic material.
Today all natural order is lost and tribes are taught to care for other groups that give few fucks in the reverse direction or are actively trying to take over.
Darwanism flies cocks into butts.
I’ve had five, that might not be ‘the most’, but it’s enough.
Then donate your sperm to a clinic, you Will accomplish your goal but you wont find meaning. In fact you would take the fun part out of the process
The meaning is for mankind to master enlightenment
No that is a fallacy! Every individual thinks that they are the most useful or doing the most crucial job so when philosophers come to define meaning they always want to bring it back to philosophy. They invent silly terms like enlightenment which mean nothing.
Philosophy is mostly just logic scrabble and word scrabble. Humans are hardly rational to make the right decisions anyway. “I think therefore I am” is clearly just again the same self-importance fallacy where they wish to use something exclusive to humans as humans to define the value of life to exclude other life forms.
They wish to make the meaning and value of things relate to themselves. Humans can never be rational when you are debating or analysing something that is not purely quantitative, sadly. You can never debate or analyze and detatch self-interest.
You see that when every Judge seems to decide on marginal issues where its socially acceptable to take either line in-line with their own private preferences.
Are there many judges who strongly oppose and hate abortion and yet come down against Roe vs Wade? Rarely ever its always the case with humans and arguments we merely pretend we are this super objective rational and its a species level Dunning-Kruger effect.
I think being too rational and objective just makes no evolutionary sense and will be selected against. We judge everything through this filter of our own self-interest and aggrandisement and that includes our ideas on the meaning of life.
Personally I go with the evolutionary imperative to push our genes as that is the most logical meaning you can find if you have to find one. Without meaning life is empty and that is why many whites don’t have any greater purpose and are happy to die out.
In all reality: nothing. Life just evolved in the right circumstance.
dunning-kruger at the species level. Surely religion is rubbish – but without it you will not breed much these days – but we are like ants climbing a branch in this universe and have no real idea what is beyond the universes – if anything – or what everything actually is.
We still really don’t know that much and so it is odd that we can make these conclusions. We can say current religions are clearly frauds but that as frauds they are very successful and will win since their followers have all the children and the motivation but we cannot say that much more than that.
1) We don’t know how much we don’t know
2) We don’t know how much we can never discover
3) We don’t know if it is possible to ever answer question 1) and 2)
Those still discussing silly religious books obvious written by trolls have the advantage in this sad sad world. When will AI put us out of our misery and turn us off?
The meaning of life is simple.
Ive accessed the akashic record.
It is as follows:
‘The meaning of life, is to experience all that it has to offer. Joy, pain, love etc…”
I’m with JD.
Hookers and booze it is.
God help me…
herp de derp, i am a gullible goy who is going to do what the (((propaganda))) tells me to do
This short life is like an examination. Then we will die, be judged and sent to heaven or hell, which will last forever. So the purpose of this life is to pass the exam and go to heaven. The following book explains what happens after death and what heaven is like: The Shopping Malls of Heaven: and the Meaning of Life: http://a.co/j4ZaCmo
Hell, you say???
We’re grown ups. Don’t tell us about fairy tales like they’re real.
Fairy tales? Not so sure about that.
Deep down I suppose I do believe in God.
And I absolutely believe that evil exists and is very real. The devil and demons and such.
Yeah, I believe in God.
But I also believe, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that God does not believe in me.
AS,
Or like everyone else in the world, god doesn’t care about you.
You gotta look after yourself these days, nobody else gives a shit!
@AutomaticSlim
Lots of individuals have surfaced and found God before it was too late. There’s always time.
@ Burton
My father went back to church at 78. Two years before he died. I guess he played it just right.
@ JD
“You gotta look after yourself these days, nobody else gives a shit!”
Yup.
(((atheism)))
Belief in a creator and belief in a religion are two entirely different things that few people. For instance, Thomas Jefferson and Albert Einstein each believed in a creator, but that was the extent of it.
Perhaps we should embrace our ignorance and vulnerability and just let life unfold but not get too passive.
The only thing we can know from observation is that humans and other creatures are born, mature, then grow weaker and ultimately die. Each life phase represents a different kind of existence in itself, a different outlook on life and the meanings in those life phases are shaped by our experiences and ability.
Cognitively normal, healthy and even intelligent and fit people know from observation that time does not wait for anyone and 20 years from now our life experience will be different. Each day of our lives is almost like a miniature life; you wake up fresh full of ambition and start to take on softer values as you grow more tired and complacent late in the evening.
The idea of reincarnation makes more sense to me than the eternal life or death thing because it’s seems our lives are broken into constant phases and reinvigoration.
When your dick goes limp, life has no meaning anymore. Time to check out.. and it’s always best to do it on your terms, rather than having disease or some fuckwit texting behind the wheel do it for you.
Don’t be in too much of a hurry to check out. They invented a medicine beginning with V. Oh wait a second, you would actually have to take a blue pill:)
Hehe good observation 😉 The magic V pill might make your dick harder than a physics exam, but it doesn’t give you back the zest for life, that buzz in your gut when you look at a pretty young senorita. A honed ax is no good if you’ve lost interest in chopping down trees.
Now I’m pushing 50 I’ve had this happen on occasion, and seriously, it makes you not care if you swerve in front of a semi-trailer. I’ll grow up when I’m 85.
The meaning of life is to die not knowing what weight your actions, if at all, will carry into afterlife. Hence, one could live their life morally, faitfully and in good character, yet find out that heaven is just a human fabrication; henceforth having lived a life of devotion to no avail. Inversely, a sinful person could live an amoral life riddled with sleeze and find out that hell or an alternate version, does in fact exist. So the meaning of our life is to live it according to our own projective reasoning but to be aware that there is a very real possibility that there is an aftermath even in our death, in which the consequeneces of our lives could still come into play.
there isn’t one! problem solved
If we align ourselves with what we want from our lives and do it in a virtuous way then surely that is our own meaning of life
Aside from all the modern/philosophical stuff already covered here, on a different level sometimes I’ll catch a glimpse of it in the glint of a good dog’s eye. Cats and wild animals, too. There’s a moment or a connection that contains the unexplained, but seemingly explains itself all at once. If you’ve seen it, there aren’t words, and it’s different from the profound stare you receive from a newborn baby or other “innocent” entity that contains the secret sauce we might call “meaning of life.” Our ultimate privilege was to perceive such a moment as it moved through us, and I think Santayana or Bergson may have agreed with this interpretation.
Life is a short term exposure to SHIT!
Learn from it if you can…
Then STFU
This nightmare will be over soon.. Thank God!
Let’s say that I found the meaning of life…
There is no possible way that I could share it with you.
WRONG!
The meaning of life is stated in every single major holy book on earth. Bible, Koran just to name a few state it very clearly.
Conquer the earth and sire children.
Thats about it, the meaning of life and the best contribution to evolution you can possibly do.
I forget the author, maybe it was even a Facebook post or something I saw… But paraphrasing; “there are two kinds of people-people who try to be happy and people who try to be worth a damn. The former is typically neither, while the latter ends up being both”
You don’t know what the meaning of life is? I told everyone what it was in a comment section to a similar topic her on ROK recently…Its actually so simple and so basic and so obvious, it will shock you. But you will have to look at ROKs recent similar articles to this and re read the comments there, BECAUSE THOSE PREVIOUS DISCUSSIONS are everything germain to this topic. Men if you want to self help and improve. Find my comment there, ruminate on the topic itself and more importantly the other comments on those topics, when you find my comment there, it will be like a light switch clicked on. Everyone is searching for that meaning tot heir lives, but they are looking for a single sentence way to express what it is, an easy clear straightforward answer.
Well ok then. I will make it easy for you. CONTENTMENT with your life. What comprises that contentment is not a cookie cutter solution answer that will fit all men. The meaning of your life…is nothing more than achieving your contentment…That’s it. You anguish over the answer and miss the whole point of journey to it. Contentment is the moment of your personal nirvana, the moment where you realize that you are at the closest point to satisfaction of all your personal goals and desires..it is the purpose of your life, to genuflect and recap all that you have done and been in your life, all your trials all your success and failures, and then ask yourself if you had it to do again, what would you change..but more importantly why would you change any part of it. I got down voted for a couple comments I made how well you understand your self that had to do with choices. here they are;
“if you had all the answers and met all your goals…what would the challenge of life be then?”
“you know the biggest problem with Believers is is that they abdicate any responsibility for their lives for the direction for their Curiosities and for searching for what their ultimate meaning is about by simply accepting that it’s outside of their control outside of their own influencing their final destination. in the end Believers take the cop out of abdicating any responsibility for their lives because it’s easier. knowers know because they took personal responsibility to find out the answers themselves”
and “…. we can never know what each decision fork will bring for us, and then we can never know what would have happened if we had made a different choice at it.”
Proud_Nimby responded back in part saying “…. I have to find “it” within myself to motivate, inspire, agitate, focus and drive for change – because I’ve learned that more often than not, when it comes from others I don’t like the results. But there has to be more to life than endless activity and fluttering from one thing to the next…..”
The meaning of life…..it is answered for you in the only way that it can be, through personal definitions, but ultimately that answer is always unique individually, but it always comes from the same source, reflection on your life when you are really ready to look at your own life and what you made of it, and where you go from there.
Whta’s the meaning of life?
My opinion is that the meaning of life it’s the life itself! without life nothing is important due there aren’t anyone left to complain.
Now, if you ask the same question on a personal basis then each of us have their own goals to fullfil their lives, the most important side of such meanings is that you must pursue your live’s goal without hurt anyone who are doing the same, and that’s the real problems who lies inside humanity since centuries.
Regarding women? they are simply biological parassite who use men as host to archive their goals, so, women aren’t a meaning of life, they are a liability non an asset!
Hence, my fellow brothers, pursue your goals, avoid long term commitment with women and enjoy your life because remember, you just live ONCE, and you never knows when it could end!
I’m not “avoiding long term (sic) commitment with women.” Am I wrong?
Life is the meaning of life. And life’s too short to worry about your imaginary friends in heaven. My philosophy? Work hard … try not to leave a mess … act civilly when you’re in public … Perhaps the elegant Latin poet was right when he wrote “Take the middle way” in “The Metamorphoses.”
Often, the meaning of life comes when you’re not looking for it. Also, you’ll discover as you age that the best insights come from a combination of experience and memory, in other words meaning is not always apparent at the time, but, only matures like a good wine with the passing of time.
I look at life as a flaming torch that I was given when I was born into this world. It’s my responsibility to carry it forward, until the end. The light illuminates my own path but occasionally it spills over to other people’s paths. The light keeps the darkness at bay. If it dims, the darkness draws closer. One day, the torch will go out but my life will not have been in vain — I have passed the light to my child.
Life is a gift which you should use in service to others (not to a point of self-negation, of course). There is plenty of suffering around you — reduce it, make yourself useful, be the person others are glad to see in a time of crisis. You won’t find the meaning of life in indulging your appetites, pleasures and impulses. I remember this from a Greek myth: you can either show an empty wine skin at the end of your wretched life, or show a score of heroic deeds (like Heracles). Cheers.
Kurt Vonnegut gave a good answer in Breakfast of Champions. Someone had written “what is the meaning of life?” on the wall of a public bathroom stall & the protagonist grabs his pen and answers:
“What is the purpose of life?…To be the eyes and ears and conscience of the Creator of the Universe, you fool!”
If you think your existence is just an accident because some lightning hit a pond of protein six billion years ago then please just do us all a favor an delete yourself from this realm because apparently your existence is meaningless anyhow.
The “meaning of life” is going to vary person by person. You were put here for a reason. Part of your journey is to figure out exactly why. Don’t worry you aren’t in the dark, I am sure you have seen and know of signs that have been given to you perhaps even very early in life. And once you figure out the “why” then you just do it.
Is there some grand reward of eternal life in paradise if you complete your mission or live by some moral code? Maybe. But does that really matter if you achieve the purpose for which you were put here and it betters the lives of those around you? Most will say “well yeah I want my payback for cleaning toilets for 40 years and not being an SOB mugging people and selling drugs”. Guess what there is no payback other then at the end of your life you will feel like you have achieved your purpose. Sound unfair? Sure. But what about the human condition is fair?
No reason to get excited
The theif then kindly spoke
There are many here among us
Who think that life is but a joke.
But you and I have been through that
And this is not our fate
So let us not talk falsely
The hour is getting late.
Perhaps a big shit test to see if we are worthy of an afterlife
I really enjoyed reading your article. I’ve been thinking what’s the meaning of life these few years like you did while other people always thinking of making out with girls and boys. Like you mentioned, the answer is different depending on the person, but it started dawning on me brick by brick although I don’t think that I already reached the point and Im still searching. Anyway, we won’t find the truth, unless we pursue it.
The meaning of life “is to remember those that have danced before you who in fact give your life meaning”. To remember that those before us going back in time. Is evolutionary. To know that you are part of ALL that is. To define that experience would encompass unconditional Love and accetence. To know and respect your place in the red rover line of life. Now simply leave your bucket full of more good deeds than bad. For life is self exposed universe through COMPOUND INTEREST. You are not above the grass or earth you walk on as a part of the grand universe as well. Indeed we can evolve to live as a child. To explore and tastes the world as it dances at our feet. For that I AM grateful INDEED!
Adh-Dhariyat 51:56

The true meaning of life? Life is nothing but a learning experience and Earth is our playground. Forget what religions have taught you, because they are all corrupt (some more than others) and aim to control you and strip you from your free will. We are free souls with free will.
Souls who are relatively new to this physical world are more interested in all the physical pleasures this world has to offer. Souls who are mature are more intellectually inclined and interested in knowledge. The genetics of our body is of course linked to the soul level. Mature souls need a body that suits their intellectual needs.
ROK was originally more based on knowledge and intelligence, but what is left of this? It’s now a site full of white supremacists, Christian extremists and retarted basement dwellers with too much free time (or they simply have no life).
The meaning of life? Survival. Simple as that. This includes leaving a legacy: having children and raise them for better future. If you achieved at least this much and even enjoyed your stay in this planet , you achieved more than the was majority of people in this planet.
This whole “what’s the meaning of life” philosophical non-sense is ridiculous (and would have been deemed as such even in the Western world prior to the 1950s.)
Life is about survival and reproduction.
Simple as that.
The rest of the talk is as they say “first world problem.”
President Abraham Lincoln stated something once about happiness. He said that “most people will be as happy as they make up their minds to be”.. That’s kind of a clue to one answer posed by the article. You create the meaning in your own life. That’s a scary and intimidating answer, for most people, since it’s going to imply, for most people, that it’s all up to you, no excuses, no relying on father figures and standard formulas in a rapidly changing world.
Not a single correct answer above this comment. Not one. All answers are human related, but trees, flowers, animals are also part of life. Their meaning has to be our meaning. I believe that the answer to this great question is not allowed for us to know. Ever. Because once you reach its meaning there is nothing else to do, to hope for, to life for, no purpose to carry on. Wouldn’t that be depressing? And life is definitely not fueled by depression. I hope this answers your question, dear human.
