While the saying “so goes California, so goes the nation” might still be accurate, the neighboring People’s Republic of Oregon also provides a glimpse into the dystopia that the radical left has planned for America. Recently, Portland bar owner Christopher Penner was convicted of violating Oregon’s civil rights laws after he refused service to a group of transsexual customers whose presence would have hurt his business:
The case hinged on a pair of voice-mails messages Penner left members of the Rose City T-Girls, a social club in Portland that includes transgender women, cross-dressing straight individuals, gay men and lesbians, in 2012.
In the voice-mails, Penner was apologetic but admonished the group’s members not to return to his bar, The P Club, because they were hurting business and because other customers had derisively referred to his establishment as a “tranny” or “gay” bar, according to court documents.
As part of the state’s persecution of him, Penner had to pay $400,000 in damages to the customers he purportedly hurt, forcing him to close his bar in the process.
The hounding of Christopher Penner is yet another example of how the radical left is using the government to enforce their will on anyone who disagrees with their beliefs. Merely a decade ago, leftists agitated for gay marriage on the basis of tolerance and “it doesn’t matter who you love”; in the year 2015, leftist-controlled state governments are actively persecuting anyone they believe is insufficiently supportive of the Gay Mafia.
The Death Of Freedom Of Association
As Penner’s defense against the state of Oregon states, the reason he barred the Rose City T-Girls from his bar was because their presence was negatively impacting his business. Customers had begun referring to Penner’s bar as a “tranny” or “gay” bar, giving it a reputation that was scaring away long-term customers and hurting his bottom line. Asking the T-Girls not to come back to his establishment was an act necessary for his survival.
Unfortunately, the left-wing Oregon state government has been vociferous in denying freedom of association to its citizens, particularly citizens who run afoul of cultural Marxist dogma. It was only a few months ago that the Christian owners of the now-closed Sweet Cakes bakery in Gresham were forced to pay $135,000 in damages to a lesbian couple to whom they refused to bake a wedding cake for. To further hammer the point home, the state government threatened to seize the bakers’ home if they didn’t pay up.
Freedom of association—the right to choose who you have personal or business relationships with—is one of the most fundamental rights of a free society. Christopher Penner was not discriminating against the Rose City T-Girls because he had a bias against homosexuals or transsexuals, but because their presence was scaring off his regular customers. Conversely, the Sweet Cakes bakery did not want to bake a cake for an event that their religion did not endorse (a gay marriage).
Neither the T-Girls nor the lesbian couple who tried to patronize Sweet Cakes were truly harmed by being excluded. The former could have gone to another bar and the latter to another bakery. The only reason either of them had for suing the respective businesses who shut them out was a sick, perverse desire to force themselves on people who don’t want them around, and the state government is siding with them.
How This Ruling Will Kill Business In Oregon
Beyond being a freedom that is integral to American society, freedom of association is also necessary for a strong economic environment. Businesses need to be able to discriminate against undesirable, uncooperative or unruly customers in order to better serve their other patrons. With this ruling, Oregon has declared that the feeeeeelings of aggrieved minorities supersede the freedoms of business owners to control who they serve.
Without the liberty to eject undesirable customers, business in Oregon will slowly decline, as no business owner will want to invest in a state where the government can override your decisions at the whim of a mentally ill customer. As a former resident of Portland myself, I know that the city—and, to a lesser extent, the whole state—is crawling with mental defectives such as the Rose City T-Girls, itching to file lawsuits the minute a business owner displeases them.
Ultimately, the state of Oregon’s attempts to enforce “tolerance” will hurt Oregonians by destroying the local economy. This is typical for the left, and it’s unlikely they’ll care; so long as they get their warm fuzzies from being “accepting,” they don’t care how many lives they ruin.

I think environment has a lot to do with it. Even if a small percentage (less than 5 percent of the general population) of people have a natural tendency to swing a certain way — they are socially conditioning the masses to think there is something wrong with them and they are not straight.

As someone who was an Oregonian up until very recently, I feel quite embarrassed for my state. I do want to say, though, that most of the state outside of the city of Portland (which is as left-wing as they come) is actually quite middle-of-the road to conservative, at least from what I’ve observed. Marion County, where I lived, is primarily rural, small-town, and traditional, and in most ways the polar opposite of Portland.

The freakin’ world got on us (Indiana) for trying to do something about the problem. We’re big enough that there’s a huge gay population, yet small enough that there are a lot of struggling mom and pop restaurants and bars. The gays are constantly having sex in public restrooms and out in the open in parks. And then they’ll pick a certain establishment as the go-to place for a few months, drive them out of business, and then move on and wreck somebody else’s business. Places where families start going and they start doing well, will have hoards of gays flood in kissing and touching each other inappropriately, and you can’t take children into the restrooms. So normal people just give up. It’s not fair, because they HAVE their bars and restaurants, but they get bored or want to push themselves off on the straights.
The worst ones are the lesbians, who strategically position themselves in schools as gym coaches and counselors, and then start turning the teen-age girls onto the lifestyle.
Anyone who says there’s no Gay Mafia or Gay Agenda has their head in the sand.
Geez, glad I don’t live anywhere near you, no offense. We don’t have roving bands of gays marauding our restaurants and if I went into a restroom and someone tried anything funny, they’d walk out of the restroom missing some teeth.
LOL. Yeah. Actually, there have been a number of cases where the gay community protested police brutality. In every case it was an undercover or off duty cop standing at a urinal, and the gay would just go up and touch his wang. The cop would belt him and then arrest him. Our local Vice Squad monitors the usual stuff they do in other cities. But they say that they spend almost all their time in restrooms and parks busting gays. And they have to do that because the public is complaining, otherwise they wouldn’t care. So that tells you that our population isn’t happy with the fags pushing their lifestyle on everyone else. But still we got skewered by the SJW’s for passing the RFA. Our politicians screwed up by making it a religious issue. If they’d just stuck to their guns and say it was a Public Decency Law it’d be different. Oh, but to publically accuse the gays of what everyone knows they’re doing is prejudice. . .I got that.
There’s got to be safer ways to handle issues like this for the business owners…
Cake Owner: Why not simply say “We’re sorry. We would love to do business with you, but our schedule is completely full with other orders and we will not have time to bake your cake as well. Might we suggest X, Y, or Z bakeries?”
Bar Owner: Just take forever to serve them and keep getting their orders wrong. Eventually they’ll just stop coming
Granted, I think all store owners should be allowed to simply say “no” but seeing as the current mantra for these people is “destroy the infidels!” they gotta take steps to protect themselves from legal ramifications.
Meanwhile the left still refuses to take action against a single muslim-owned business that refuses to serve gays; nor a single muslim-driven taxi that refuses to drive passengers with service dogs or carrying alcohol.
Meanwhile the left demands that employers bow down to the “religious freedom” of their employees when a muslim refuses to do a job that involves transporting or serving anything that isn’t halal, but will arrest a Christian for refusing to do their job on the same religious arguments.
Liberals respect only strength and violence. Christians are not well known for randomly exploding in a coffee shop, or beheading people on the street… therefore liberals feel safe harassing Christians. They are weak pacifists after all.

I’ll give the same opinion I gave on a feminist blog. If I had a business, I wouldn’t mind serving gays and lesbians, as long as they adhere to common sense decency rules. The reason is simple:capitalism. With that being said, others should have the right to decide who they serve and who they don’t. The bloggers at the feminist forum tried to rip me a new one and I even got called an asshole. Thoughts?
I agree that freedom of association is dead. It is just faddish. In Canada, it means that our elected government cannot rein in public union power because there is now a constitutional right to collective bargaining. Meanwhile, it goes back and forth if you want to buy a condo or rent an apartment without a bunch of screaming brats messing with your Sunday morning: adults only living spaces have been banned at various times and in various places.

Various ethnic minorities work together and exclude others on a routine basis. Some more than others, individuals may differ, but you don’t hear a peep out of the left about this obvious “racism”.

I was into the BDSM scene for several years. Some clubs would have fetish nights where you could go there and do horrible things to your partner or dance with them on a leash and various other things.

At the other end, the “community” would organize what was called a “munch” where like-minded people would meet for lunch.

In the case of the “fetish night”, that was the choice of the venue to hold that. In the case of the “munch” everyone showed up in street clothes and acted “normal”.

The two points here are that the owners of the venue have the right to market to people of their choosing, and that we did not impose leather and lace / whips and chains on the local coffee shop owner to fuck with their shit to make us feel whole.

My perspective as a former lawyer is different. Gays and lesbians want to have porn that is excluded from obscenity laws, have clubs that violate local laws regarding debauchery, and then parade around on the public dime and call it a “Pride Day”

I disagree with all of this. The trannies ‘would have hurt business?’ Maybe, but by not serving them it definitely killed the business. I don’t see this bar owner as hero, I see him as a fool who let his staff down by fighting for the right to not make money. I know this will be interpreted here as me endorsing trannies, I don’t. But businesses that start discriminating against people coming to spend money are just shutting their doors for spite , not principle.
I often have genuine reasons to tell someone to take their business elsewhere, but have found from experience that providing those reasons to the people in question just leads to pointless arguments. An all-to-common example:
I catch Jake shoplifting. After I’ve either got him to pay for the stuff he stole or, failing that, sent him through the courts and got him some community service – and either way stored the CCTV evidence somewhere safe – I tell Jake to stay the hell away from my shop.
Jake still wants to receive service from my shop, so he sends his friend Adam to buy Jake’s shopping for him. As Jake knows that I will refuse Adam service if I see Jake loitering outside my shop, Jake hides round the corner. As soon as Adam has been served, Jake emerges and loiters with Adam outside my shop. Adam may or may not take heed to my requests to go and loiter outside my competitor’s shop instead, but Jake will make my shopfront his home for the next 2 hours.
Eventually, I ban Adam for repeated loitering. So now he hides with Jake round the corner and they send Tom in to do their shopping. Now as soon as Tom has been served, Adam and Jake will emerge from their hiding-place to loiter outside my shop with Tom.
Rinse and repeat until Jake has all of his friends trying to receive service and loitering outside my shop. The littering will increase in exponential proportion to the loitering.
To nip this kind of scenario in the bud, I will ban not only Jake, but also all of his known associates as soon as I catch Jake stealing. However, if Adam or Tom ask why they are banned and I tell them it’s because of Jake’s criminal activities, pointless arguments about them being innocent and ignorant of Jake’s crimes will ensue.
To avoid these arguments, I will not give Adam or Tom a reason beyond “Because I said so.” Other favourite phrases of mine include “I could refuse to serve you because I don’t like the colour of your T-Shirt and there’s not a damn thing you could do about it.”
Nevertheless, I keep the CCTV of Jake’s stealing safe. Should Tom ever try to claim that I banned him because he’s black and that I therefore I owe him a shedload of money as compensation, I will simply whip out the CCTV of Jake stealing (and any CCTV I happen to have of Jake and Tom together to prove that they are known associates) and explain my policy of banning not only thieves but also their associates. It’s never come to that point though.
TL;DR – Penner should have waited for one member of the T-Girls group to make a mistake. Didn’t have to be anything major – getting a little too drunk, leaving an empty crisp packet lying around instead of putting it in the bin – whatever. Then he’s got a reason to ban that customer (“Mr. Jenner can be seen in this footage driving away from the pub, despite having drunk 3 Shirley Temples and having been advised that he should get a taxi home. This establishment does everything in its power to encourage responsible drinking and we do not tolerate drink driving.”) as well as the rest of the group (“Having banned Mr. Jenner from the premises, we discovered that some of his associates were buying drinks for him while he hid at the back of the pub where the bartender couldn’t see him.”)
It would be very naive to think this wasn’t planned by the trannies. Just like the lesbians who went from bakery to bakery to see which one would say no, these trannies actively looked for a place who’d block them, knowing full well who to call after to get the attention it’d bring them.
