With all of their god-forsaken flaws, I have come to appreciate the softness and warmth of American women when approached for the first time.

The German woman is well-dressed, educated, and extremely aggressive in pursuing career goals, oftentimes outpacing her male counterparts by wide margins (with the help of radical affirmative action policies, of course). Despite varying degrees of physical attractiveness depending on region, the typical German woman is bland and boring, completely lacking originality and flavor. Do not expect to laugh with a German girl or enjoy a home cooked meal. German women tend to look, act, and dress the exact same; if you’ve met one, chances are, you’ve met them all.
From my experience here, there are two types of women in Germany: club rats and office ghosts.
The club rats are typically young students (18-25) and spend at least three days per week snorting amphetamines and taking home random Turks or Africans from clubs. Being an articulate, well-educated Westerner is not an advantage at all, even if you can speak the language fluently; neofeminism has convinced them they must prove they are not Nazis (a subconscious result of German post-war guilt) by sleeping with 10 off-the-boat immigrants per weekend. It’s important to note, however, that being an American doesn’t put you into this category. Avoid these women like the plague.
Office ghosts tend to be attractive, young professionals with tolerable personalities, yet are extremely difficult to find in a social setting outside of work. Practice your day game and head to the nearest Rewe grocery store (one of the more expensive stores, often frequented by young professionals) or book store. Keep in mind, this group still possesses a cold, skeptical, and distant personality when approached by a stranger, so keep your expectations low.
The only women generally worth pursuing in Germany are Eastern immigrants from Poland or Russia, or ERASMUS exchange students from Italy or Spain.
We’ve only screwed ourselves – the US Army and college students
The long-term ramifications of maintaining a fluctuating force of between 50,000 and 100,000 American soldiers (a large portion of which lacks cultural perspective and post-secondary education) in a European country has proven to be largely detrimental to our image and reputation in Germany. Drunk driving accidents and clashes with locals are frequent. Entire cities have been reshaped by American presence, and in most locations, we are neither respected nor welcomed. Southern Germany (including Munich) is most affected.
Additionally, an obnoxious, uncultured influx of college exchange students over the past 10 years (typically white knight betas from Wisconsin or Ohio) has reinforced this negative stereotype of Americans. You can find these ridiculously loud idiots making embarrassing approaches in clubs and bars, often early in the night (10-11 PM) leaving the local stock with a bad impression by the time they’ve consumed a few drinks.
It’s worth noting in this context that the demise of the American man in Germany is largely a result of our own behavior while traveling abroad. Americans tend to be extremely loud, superficial, and display an arrogant unwillingness to adapt to new languages and cultures. It’s crucial to disprove these stereotypes in order to achieve social success in Germany – learn the language, lower the volume, and be respectful!
Why avoid Germany?
To summarize, modern German culture, saturated with coldness and a general unwillingness to welcome newcomers into existing social circles, makes traveling within the country and meeting new people significantly less enjoyable or rewarding compared to other European countries. A pervasive post-war guilt complex, radical feminism, and decades of far-left governance have resulted in the widely held subconscious belief that masculinity is a detriment to society and a return to the nationalistic tendencies that destroyed the country. The presence of hundreds of thousands of American soldiers and students means the American man is no longer a cultural rarity as in Eastern Europe, Italy, or Spain, but rather a loud, obnoxious nuisance worthy of nothing more than an eye roll and “tschüss”. We are stale bread.
Is it possible to make great friends and have enlightening experiences living or traveling in Germany? Absolutely – but don’t be fooled by the rumors of quality beer and blondes in “dirndel” dresses. Germany has become a social graveyard with only a few old cathedrals and soccer games worth visiting. Save your money, head to a country with more hospitable people and weather, and you won’t regret it.

As a German I can tell you that your analysis of Germany is far from being true. Yes, cold approaching is not easy and German girls are not as warm and welcoming as in Italy or Romania. But to say that the German male lacks masculinity, especially compared to Americans or British is a preposterous statement. We haven’t become the primary economy in Europe for no reason, and we let other members of the EU play according to our rules. So how is this a sign of being weak and feeble? Many German guys are tall and go to the gym regularly and you will find a large proportion that are very career focussed, not just the women.
Also, Americans are well liked here in Germany and most Germans speak good English. I have no idea where the notion that “if you are American, do not go there” should come from. Apart from political criticism I have never heard girls reacting in a bad manner when they found out that the guys in front of them were Americans.
I would say however that our women are certainly not as hot as in other countries. Many girls are on the chubby side, and girls do not take good care of themselves as they do in EE and do not act as feminine. So from this point of view I would not recommend our country as a place to “get laid”.
But as a country in general your assessment is wrong and you should spend more time with Germans to get a better picture of this country before writing such an article.
I have to agree with this. Germany has some of the greatest companies in the world – VW, BMW, Mercedes, Deutsche Bank, German engineering is second to none (well maybe second to Swiss and Swedish). These were not built by wimpy ‘beta’ males.

Hi Anythinggoes, I am german too and live in Nürnberg, Bavaria. We used to have two big barracks in our area, Erlangen and Bamberg. And I have to say that BlickMang is spot on concerning the image of US Americans.
Let me first say: I travel a lot, and I think US Americans are (on average) easily the most social and greatest people you can meet anywhere in the world. I get along great with them and have made many friends which I visited in the US in Iowa, Colorado and California. But the way our local (franconian) population thinks about them is entirely different. To the average german person here (who do not travel much except to Italy or Spain for summer vacation), US Americans are horny, loud imbeciles of questionable character. And I used to think the same way.
The reason was: Growing up here, you would usually meet US Americans in the shape of GIs at local clubs. When you were out on your own or with male friends, they would either ignore you or seek confrontation. When you were out with girls, suddenly they would come to you and act like they know you just to sneak into your social circle. That and their general obnoxious behaviour when they were out in huge groups on friday or saturday evening has given them an extremely bad reputation, just like BlickMang said above.
Your view may be different because either you do not come from a town with GI barracks or you are too young and they were already largerly dissolved in your area.
Personally, I only managed to change my perspective and come to really appreciate US Americans when I travelled for work, met them in business contexts and it suddenly became apparent to me that the military (of any country) is a very select group of people (usually the most uneducated) that is not representative of a whole country’s population at all.

Many people here dream of studying abroad or living in the US, and most students watch shows like “how I met your mother”. In general, this is the case wherever there are US military barracks, fueled no less in part by the soldiers, sailors, and Marines that are located there. Not all, of course, but sufficient amounts over the years to drive this point home. Usually, it’s the 18-25 crowd that’s away from home for the first time in their lives.
On the flip side, the US military members I’ve known over the years talked about “groupies” near the bases — the ones who are signed on post and then take full advantage of cheaper booze and cigarettes, and American dick whenever they want it. Again, I have to blame the US military for allowing this to happen. I have to wonder how many of these “groupies,” in turn, shun their local men because they know they can get a better deal, if only for a short while, from the Americans. I’ve seen this in both Germany and East Asia.
As for myself, I made a point not to call attention to myself as an American. I never donned the typical American “costume” or demeanor, and tired to go with the flow in the cities I visited while in Germany and elsewhere in Europe. History buff that I am, I liked to visit places like Weimar, Leipzig, and the smaller cities where you’re not likely to find many Americans as you would in Munich, Frankfurt, and Berlin. Nearly all the time, people approached me and started speaking German, assuming that I was German. When I told them I was American, they then tried to speak English and were warmer towards me because of it.
Moral of the story = when in Rome . . . You can go farther that way.

You have to be joking, don’t you? In the south, sure. Southerners are some of the nicest and friendliest people I have ever met. But they are nothing like yankees. Yankees are some of the coldest and most distant people you are going to meet anywhere in the world.
You will get a better hearing from Saudis and Russians as an Australian than you will in the northern states in the US.
It does matter where you come from. My first day in France I could not even get served in a restaurant and the french were very, very cold to me. So I asked one of the waiters what the problem was. He said I was english and this was how they treated the english.
I told him no, I was Australian and showed him my Australian passport…he IMMEDIATELY was very friendly, kissed me on both cheeks and said “your ancestors came across the world to fight on our soil for us, we honour your ancestors by honouring you!” He even gave my wife and I a free glass of wine.
He told me that when ever we walk into a restaurant to be sure to tell the waiter we were Australian and not english and talk about kolas and kangaroos a bit….that always helps he said.
Sure enough, for the remaining 2 days my wife and I were in Paris we were treated like royalty. When I travel to paris I make sure the waiters know I am Australian.
One of the most hostile places for Australians to travel is actually the UK if you can believe that. So yes…it depends where you are from as to how you will be treated. It has a big influence. I have worked all over the world toom just by the way.

I have found after my world travels, that yes in general since America and Americans are easily the most friendly of the countries I’ve been to. That said, we are a very “mixed culture and people. More often it is the European and Asian regions that harbor xenophobic out looks and social and political baggage that creates a atmosphere of hostility to those “different” or foreign.

The only group of people I have ever met who are worse drunks than “aussies on tour” are “swedes on tour”. I will agree that people in the north and in cities are far more judgemental and full of themselves. Rural people are the salt of the earth, and offer warmth without calculation. It’s just a fact of urban vs rural I think. The exception of course is when you end up in a small town gone wrong – where they just wait to fleece outsiders. Those kind of places happen everywhere also, but I would say far less in the USA, although the South does love to throw people in jail. People overseas need to take that seriously. You do not fool with the police in the South.
As a WA resident, I do think that Californians are some of the phoniest people on earth, and we have plenty here in Seattle also. New Yorkers can’t be classified, because they are motivated and from all over the world. I find them to be pretty vibrant people, unless they grew up in NY, and think they are special for nothing.
The midwest does seem to breed some of the friendliest, sensible, yet smart people out there. David Letterman and Johnny Carson were both midwesterners, so it shows you how social that part of the country can be. THat said, not much of the midwest is particularly sophisticated. Chicago has great comedy clubs and museums, but it’s lost all of its blues history from what I’ve seen. Great retro restaurants in Chicago though. Chicago still has places that remind you of 20-30 years in the past, unlike the West coast, and New York, where EVERYTHING has been gentrified. The midwest still has a lot of cities just barely making it, and that means there is still a lot of authentic old history there, which I prefer to the shiny and new which typify Seattle, Portland, SF. LA is an exception, because it is just too big and nasty to gentrify, but it’s a special case. UNlike EUrope, America does not save enough of its urban history, particularly that which was American in particular, the last 100-200 years. You can see some of what’s left in the midwest rust belt cities. Forget seeing almost any history on the West Coast, except, of course, the natural beauty, which is the real reason to come here.
The South is probably worth visiting mostly because it hasn’t gentrified completely, and there is epic history down there of all kinds.

Not all military people are like this, but in the USA, people of disadvantage and zero education are the ones who end up being the enlisted people. Germany is an export nation, so keeping the currency low helps us to export cars and goods world wide. So I think the net benefit is very strong for Germany, despite us paying for Greece. Though it has been over 20 years sense I lived there, I still have friends I speak with from time to time, and must agree with Anythinggoes general comments – the only thing I experienced even remotely close to conditions in this article was in West Berlin – ground zero for cultural shame at the time. I remember Germans to be quite warm and open to Americans.
Of course, I was not yet an adult at the time, and we were stationed in Bremerhaven, which was NATO central during the 1980s. What I found interesting at the time was that the local culture was similar enough to America to not be intimidating, yet different enough to make it apparent that the stereotypes against Americans were 110% true. As an American with a passport is as rare today as a self aware woman from any Western culture, this was quite an eye opening gift. my experience there profoundly shaped my worldview, and is one of the things I am most greatful for.

took me a long time to piece together a differing point of view as my

I have to chime in too on this subject. When travelling there, I found the Germans to be unexpectedly social and willing to “hang out”. This was just after high school though so that might have had something to do with it. They were extremely obsessed with American politics, with a tendency to moralize, and always wanted to talk about US gun laws. I sometimes intentionally acted like a goofy American because it always made them laugh. It’s true that we are louder than they are but that changes when drinking, because then they unleash themselves with a pent up energy that I now understand comes from being cucked by their society under normal circumstances. The country itself is physically very beautiful and many Germans live very clean. They’d be shocked to see all the garbage on the streets in the shitty area in which I currently live. Of course now with the “new arrivals” those clean streets will soon be but a fond memory.

Anythinggoes: I got my degree in German and have lived here for 4 years (both in the Ruhrpott and Hamburg). I’m not a weekend tourist; my assessment is accurate based on my long-term experiences here from multiple perspectives (student, professional, etc.); however, like most things, opinions vary from person to person.
Economics are not an indicator of masculinity. Germany has a powerful economy, but I’ve seen on numerous occasions Germans getting punched in the face by Turkish immigrants on the Reeperbahn. A typical Russian or Brit would fight back without hesitation; the German cries (literally!) and runs away, as I’ve seen multiple times. These factors and experiences are more symbolic than economic performance. Of course, there are normal guys here, but in comparison with other countries Germany is far behind.
Spend a week in the U.S. or U.K and you’ll immediately notice how small and physically weak most German men appear. It’s extremely difficult not to laugh when working out at the gym (coincidentally, the only people there tend to be foreigners..) because most guys wear hair gel and cologne while lifting in jeans and polos. It’s nothing personal – masculinity simply doesn’t have the same importance as it does in other EU countries.
After living here for 4 years, I have both bad experiences (outlined in my article) as well as good ones. Perhaps I’ll write my next post on the positive cultural aspects of Germany – I wouldn’t live here for so long if I didn’t like it 🙂

As for the gym I am not sure if I agree with you. I have never been to the US, so things might indeed be different since the fitness industry is a lot bigger overseas, however in clubs and gyms I regularly see tall, strong guys. In Latin America for example I thought that the guys were much smaller, often with big tummies compared to Germans (at least my experience in Mexico).
Actually I think German guys are decent looking or on average better than the girls, something I would have mentioned in this article as a good reason to stay away from Germany as a hunting ground. I have friends that are handsome and intelligent, but when I see their gf’s I cannot abstain myself from thinking that they could have done much better abroad.
I would not disagree with you on the fighting issue. Just one month ago I almost got into a fight with two drunk Polish guys, and my three other friends were rather backing off than staying with me, which I thought quite ridiculous.
However, I think you overemphasize the post war guilt, nowadays Germans are kind of weary to talk about Hitler, since we have been tortured for so many years in school and media with guilt and nowadays Germany is far from being a nationalist right wing country, so we try to avoid this topic. The reason why men try to not appear strong or dominant anymore is due to the same reasons as for Americans or Scandinavians, simply because these are “modern” times.
The main reason why I criticized this article was because I think it tried to present German culture as even worse than what we already see in the West, which I am not sure if this holds true. In the Netherlands or Norway you can also see many tall, good looking guys that have no idea of how to treat a woman. The problem lies in the modern trends of feminization, which is a global problem, not a local one.
If you were to compare Germany, I suppose Netherlands and Scandinavia are good examples, and as the forum does not usually recommend Denmark for the same reasons I would not recommend Germany. 1. Propaganda is how it is spelt. I know this was used to garner more sympathy than what they already had. However, there ere, and are, larger forces at work. There still is a lot of anti-semetic sentiment. I also hate the PC police and professional victims card wielders myself (minorities who abuse their tax privileges, feminists); so that says a lot for me to say it. There is no explaining it away. Even if a lot of it was a hoax, the atrocities were bad enough as they were to garner the world wide anger towards it even to this day. Of those testamonies he chose the 6 best, most compelling. I’ve seen that documentary and it didn’t quite sit with me. Then I saw a counter-documentary that went one-by-one through every single claim and either confirmed it, proved it was false or left it as uncertain. Within the first 45 mins of that counter-documentary as it proved the first two witnesses as full of shit. One exaggerated her claims (they showed first-interview footage proving it), and the other was a black dude who had appeared in another documentary narrated by Densil Washinton – which was stripped of all its accolades when it came to light that this black dude made up his entire testamony.
And so I stopped watching the documentary. Why?

As for eugenics, we are not even able to figure out exactly how traits are inherited. In many cases ugly and stupid parents got beautiful and smart children, and individuals that are physically unfit can sometimes be highly intelligent. I also find eugenics a fascinating topic, which due to scientific advances has become a lot more feasible and important, but you cannot tell me that children in a wheelchair should better be killed to not be a burden to society.

My belief that eugenics is the ONLY way forward will never change, and that’s partly due to the fact that I’m at the top of the genetic pile (not rubbing in salt, just stating a fact), and it’s partly due to the fact that I’m a long term thinker. Imagine 1000 years from now, imagine a world where eugenics is outlawed, now imagine a world where it is enforced. You should have two completely different pictures in your mind. One should be a eutopia and the other a shit hole. For me the eutopia is the world where I’m surrounded by smart, good-looking and healthy people.

However, look at history. It is not Utopia itself, but those who claim to know how to get there that make the worst of it. To make a Utopia (Greek for “No Place”) or perfect society, usually those who espouse this have a “fall guy.” So basically, everyone who says this has to isolate people or groups in order to make their society; usually the people who disagree with them.

1. Physically – significant deformities, handicaps etc. You get the idea.
2. Intellectually – very stupid / retarded / mentally handicapped people.
3. As for the gym I am not sure if I agree with you. I have never been to the US, so things might indeed be different since the fitness industry is a lot bigger overseas, however in clubs and gyms I regularly see tall, strong guys. In Latin America for example I thought that the guys were much smaller, often with big tummies compared to Germans (at least my experience in Mexico).
Actually I think German guys are decent looking or on average better than the girls, something I would have mentioned in this article as a good reason to stay away from Germany as a hunting ground. However, I think you overemphasize the post war guilt, nowadays Germans are kind of weary to talk about Hitler, since we have been tortured for so many years in school and media with guilt and nowadays Germany is far from being a nationalist right wing country, so we try to avoid this topic. The reason why men try to not appear strong or dominant anymore is due to the same reasons as for Americans or Scandinavians, simply because these are “modern” times.
The main reason why I criticized this article was because I think it tried to present German culture as even worse than what we already see in the West, which I am not sure if this holds true. In the Netherlands or Norway you can also see many tall, good looking guys that have no idea of how to treat a woman. The problem lies in the modern trends of feminization, which is a global problem, not a local one.
If you were to compare Germany, I suppose Netherlands and Scandinavia are good examples, and as the forum does not usually recommend Denmark for the same reasons I would not recommend Germany. Directly out of political guilt, no, but when you look at the long-term repercussions, absolutely. Multiculturalism in Germany isn’t viewed the same way as in Belgium or France (“just having foreigners among us”). Despite integration problems, Germans typically think direct engagement and multiculturalism go hand-in-hand; rightfully so, but increased disposition towards Turkish/African immigrants is a side effect.
It’s still possible to do quite well here as an American, but it’s simply not an advantage.

I second BlickMang’s view on german war guilt and how it affects male and female behaviour. While I try to make it a point to call someone out on their bad behaviour no matter whether they are german or foreign, I regularly see my fellow germans shying away from confronting a foreigner when they behave badly. This leeway is bad for germans and foreigners alike, but I think our local population has not even begun to understand how war guilt is at the root of the problem and there is no will to act on it.

The mention of club rats is entirely unnecessary. Every country on earth has club rats. A club rat is a club rat no matter where you go and they should be avoided like the plague everywhere. It is not exclusively a German problem and seems an irrelevant point.
Though my experience is limited to Bavaria(my avatar picture for proof), I think German women are quite fine. Though this being my opinion, is entirely anecdotal, so is the article so I see so reason not to use it. I have found German women to be very good for those who have a mind of traditional relationships but updated to fit today. German women, to me, are very amenable and pleasant to be around. They can be just as feminine as any other nationality yet are competent and capable of getting things done and can crack the whip on the kids when they need to.
I think it is easier to get along with Germans for people of a certain personality. Introverts do better with Germans I think, and knowing that is not the same as being able to do it.
Germany does have it problems, but as with almost all western countries the problems are a result of liberalism and loosening of standards than anything else.

Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a German tell me what its like to be a German. Russians, Poles, Ukrainians, even Belgians have told me what its like to be one of them, but being German is like being North Korean in that nobody has ever cracked the code as to just why they are the way they are.
Still I’m always hesitant to blame it on war guilt, their passivity may be linked to war guilt but how can we know without being able to compare a before and after.
Southern Germany is different from northern Germany. I just hate it when most americans think that Bavaria is the south. There is a different state beside it called Baden-Wuerttemberg and it is just as nice, if not nicer than Bavaria, but i am biased in that regard. However, the regional differences in Germany are significant. If you would ask me what being german means to me, i would have a hard time explaining it and i am not sure if i could. Germany as a state only exists since the war of 1870/71. Most germans tend to think of themselves as bavarians, swabians, prussians,…first and german as second.
There has long been major cultural differences between the Protestant North (Prussian for example) and the Catholic South (Bavarian for example) of Germany.

I think the German birth rate tells us all we need to know about German women. It’s 1.36, far short of mere replacement (2.1).
Amongst native Germans, it’s probably even lower than the suicidal 1.36 because foreign immigrants have much higher birth rates that skew the numbers.
Actually, the Turks in Germany are also below replacement… at about 1.7-1.8, which is slightly below white Americans.
Russia’s birth rate is up to 1.7, and even miserable Ukraine has perked up to 1.5 in the past couple of years. What might account for this difference? The attitude of the women!

I’ve read Tony Jodt’s “Post War” (three stars) and agree with your points to a degree.
The US did save many of them from Communism because the Western Europeans HAD to ally themselves with the US as a matter of survival. But as their prosperity returned, as a matter of US policy and self-sacrifice, they used the excess wealth to buy themselves welfare states. That was fine with the US since they couldn’t or wouldn’t contribute much to NATO anyway, except for the Wehrmacht during certain periods.
What burns me as an American is the lack of gratitude as when Jodt claimed that Europe “subcontracted out” their defense to the Americans – free riders is more like it. Even the global trading system under which Germany exports so much is the product of US effort and expense. Then, they go off on continued self-destructive policies (like multiculturalism or the Euro Zone abuses).
Europeans act like spoiled children in matters of policy which oft time trickles down to shallow individuals.
Yes, they need a good scare that they have to handle on their own if they are to survive as a culture – just like adolescents, they need challenges.

When I went over to Europe, I found that anti-Americanism is not that strong. Italians are wonderful. Germans and Scandinavians are okay, even if the women act like men. If there are any Europeans that I ended up hating, it was the Brits and the Spaniards, some of the French, and some lower-class Eastern European men.

I’ve met many Germans while they were visiting the US. They do seem to have, with varying degrees, a polite reserve about them on first meeting. However, they do respond to polite, even genteel, conversation and gradually open up. I’ve found that an American can easily and unwittingly open a topic that is verboten for them where they clam up.
I would generalize the national character as more interested in respect and privacy than in easy love.
They do seem a nation of introverts and respect some introversion in others they meet. Of course, there is always the Gemütlichkeit Falstaff-type character one sees on occasion – he’s usually a Southerner.
The German from East Germany seems to still be crawling out from under socialism. There are even less confident in themselves than West Germans.
A recent movie that offers some background is “The Lives of Others” about a Stasi man spying on a couple of artistic type East Germans. Highly recommended!
I’ve yet to encounter a German female I could get hot for – but I keep my eyes open to the prospect. Some are lookers but the suppressed femininity leaves me cold.

Couple of things will improve your experiences in Germany:
1. Learn to speak German. I know for most of the younger generations, English will do. But it really helps breaking into social circles if you can speak to at least an intermediate level of German. Germans are quite tribal, and you get to enjoy the benefits of that kind of social organization (loyalty, non-flaky reliability, deeper social and emotional connection, and being introduced to other members/cute girls of their social circles) if you become part of it. It takes time so be patient.
2. Join a few Verein (associations). Germans’ after work/school activity usually involve this. An average German in his/her 20’s generally belong to a handful of associations, whether’s it’s neighborhood, social, or sports. When I lived in Cologne I was in a Verein that does nothing but drinking and party- in the name of carnival preparation! And back in Stuttgart, I was in a volleyball Verein. I cannot tell you how many gorgeous girls in tight spandex I met there- one of which became my long term girlfriend of 3 years!
They’re definitely different from Americans. But on the whole I’d say better. Germans have more depth, they’re far more reliable and trustworthy. And the girls on the whole have higher quality both in the look and intellect department. Although they’re poisoned by feminism to some extent also. Goodluck hunting!
I would have to disagree with your first point – it was a little disappointing earning a degree in the language (and learning to speak it fluently) only to discover Germans not only speak better English than most Americans, but generally prefer to speak in English for practice & experience.
Knowing the basics in any language is extremely important, but I wouldn’t say that becoming fluent is a necessity in Germany. Besides, most larger companies based here (e.g. Google in Hamburg) make English the official company language.
Traveling to Stockholm, Uppsala, and hinterlands, I found the Swedes spoke better English and to a higher percentage than did the people of San Jose, California where I’m from. One would overhear teenagers carrying on conversations amongst themselves in English!
The only people who didn’t speak excellent English were the Somalian cab drivers.
That’s because while German is tough for English-speakers to learn, it’s easier the other way around. The Old English of Beowulf is a lot like German (and Middle English like Dutch). They still have all their regional dialects, and so growing up speaking a regional language and Standard German, switching to English is nothing to them.
Nevertheless, knowing German is essential in dealing with many older Germans who can’t speak English well. My brother said that he ran into many older Germans like that when he lived there.
Read an interesting book on contemporary German culture. A New York Jew gets a book contract from a German publisher to travel around Germany and put his impressions into a book. The result was “I Slept in Hitler’s Room.”
The author was really impressed with the Verein and its underlying tribalism, and not in a good way.

I think you paint an entirely too hostile version of Germany. I have been here on and off for 6 years. I will agree that Germans are more hostile to american tourists, especially loud obnoxious one. No argument from me there. But to someone like me, Australian? Germans have been nothing but kind and gracious hosts.
When I meet German people and they ask what the hell is an Australian doing living in Germany I tell them that Germany is the single best country I have ever visited for ease of living and that the best feature of all are the German people.
Contrary to your depiction of people in the US. I have lived and traveled extensively in the US. In the south, Dallas, Houston etc the people are warm and friendly. Indeed they take care of me and say “we don’t want you to get the idea we are like those yankees”. But people in the North of the US. They are very standoffish and cold.
There are very few people I have met in the north of the US or even california that I would characterise as even close to Germans for being open and welcoming to me personally. I think you vastly over-rate americans willingness to be gracious hosts to other people. I was working in New Jersey for 9 months and I was never once invited to dinner with one of the locals, not even at a restaurant. In Germany I am constantly invited to participate in social gatherings including meals in the homes of my german friends.
I do not date German women. I have not even had a single date with a German woman. Perhaps they are too busy being successful in their careers. But that is not a problem. As you live here you will know how many eastern european women there are around.
As far as being helpful? Germans are helpful almost to a fault. One time my wife came over and there was a train strike for the first time in many years. One of the women from the office offered to be my wifes driver for the day because she could not bear the idea that she might get a bad impression about germany from tram strike.
One time I was on one of the bullet trains and for some reason it had to stop outside the town I was to get off for 5 minutes. The serving girl in the buffet car came to me and personally apologised for the train being delayed 5 minutes and hoped it would not give me a bad impression of germany.
I laughed because where I come from, Wagga Wagga in Australia, it is quite normal to be waiting for one of only TWO trains between sydney and melbourne for the day to be told “the train is cancelled, come back tomorrow”.
For my money, Germany is the best place in the world to live right now. Then again? I live in the south, and southern Germans think anyone who lives north of Frankfurt is just a little crazy. If you have been in Cologne at Carnival there is some good reason why southern germans think germans from cologne are just a little to “out there”!! I have been to carnivale twice….a great party!!

Feminism is more advanced in Germany than it is to the east. The women aren’t as brain washed as Scandinavia but they are close from what I’ve seen. A lot of the problems come back to feminism and its global influence. The subsequent generations of men in europe post WW2 are raised to avoid conflict and are less masculine than America, I agree. Depending on the penetration of feminism in the respective European nation the effects are exacerbated from what I see.

I think the opposite. I met American /British women in London and I found them much more open and friendlier if you are a stranger to them than German women, just like the article said. As an Australian, I will say with complete confidence that Germans are some of the best people I have ever met.
Even though my German is conversational at best, I feel more at home in Germany than I do in the UK.
There are very real cultural differences between the Anglo Western world and Germany, but I think they are easily overcome.
This site is (understandably) very US centered. Some of things you say about Germans almost equally apply to Australia.

Not really. Germans will give you a fair opportunity if you try. Most Europeans are like that. Even Australians to a certain degree. But once you get to know Germans, friendship forms quickly, naturally and strongly. Americans on the other hand must be the most polite people in the world and are happy to welcome you in the party, but true friendship often takes a long time and even then may be superficial. I prefer the German way.
2. Germans are very rule orientated and boring.
This is quite true. But it is not I think what you may believe it is. Germans are insane about being on time and getting things done on time. To not do so I find can cause them a minor form of personal disgrace. Make no excuses for it, it is a country that prides itself on its planning.
However, there is a powerful unwritten rule in northern Europe (Scandinavians, Germans, Flemish and the Dutch), that it is not socially acceptable to not go with the flow or stick your head out (which I think is more akin to causing a fuss and this is very frowned upon). Germans are very creative and original thinkers and I think these things often get confused.
3. Germans have no sense of humour.
Germans do have a very developed sense of humour. But it is very different to American and British humour (which are somewhat different again). Talk about being afraid of the war, I find most Germans my age are scared not to get a joke, as they have been told all their life that they cannot laugh.
Lastly, Germans are decent people. They are an educated people. I like them and if you do not, I am happy to keep them all to myself.

good post, man, I lived in Berlin a long time and and for some strange reasons that I never understood, that city felt MAGICAL. At the time I ran away from home. I could only speak Italian and wasn’t making any efforts to learn German (bad, bad mistake, no matter where you go, if you can’t express yourself, you are screwed). But the city still felt MAGICAL. I would enjoy just going for walks, alone. The streets were HUGE. I crossed paths with thugs and knives, but I felt strangely safe. WTF, i don’t know. Also at the time there were lots of immigrants so it was easy to meet people in my same social strata: Albanians, Bulgarians, Polish, you name it. Most of us were ok guys working in restaurants. Born in the northernmost part of germany, a country which originally had no unitary people, but consisted of many peoples (die deutschen Völker) I can say there is no german archetype. Your article mingles up different kinds of behaviour, without stating which is a personal thing, a cultural thing or a social thing (many things happen all over the world at the same time).
Up here we are say from ourselves, that we are cold and hard to get along with. Foreigners (students from almost every country in the word I have spoken with) tell us different. Once you got to know us, we are heartily, a little bit crazy and in an adventurous way up to no good. Besides the stupid people, which occur everywhere. Our educationsystem is under US-control (till 2099), still telling historical lies, to infect the pupils with the shaming guilt, out of which is very hard to escape. But nobody is told, to learn, to critisize, to reflect and to ask, even in secondary school, or on universities (I work in one) what the taecher/professor emits, everything is about parotting (lies).

This article is old, but not outdated – mostly. While BlickMang did grasp plenty of aspects of “my” country correctly – bitchy women, beta & crazy men (as underlined by the obviously crazy poster “hermanthegerman”), there is something really wrong with the baseline: If you cannot get laid as a German in America, you did something wrong (it’s so easy to get laid in, say, NYC I didn’t actually believe it happended). Getting laid in Germany is difficult and mostly not worth the effort, but “being respectful” is not helpful at all.
I have little understanding about Germany outside of Bavaria, due to reasons explained in the article.
So, for Bavaria imho the following is true:

Ok, I agree with this castrated men theory after WW2 and that many German men were raised to be soft and not male dominant etc.. I grew up in Germany myself btw., but I have to disagree that they don’t like Americans. Many women in Germany like ‘exotic’ men like you described in a bit cynical sort of way and that includes Americans too, especially blacks. Sorry, but as a long-time resident of Germany I have to say that the first two are generally incorrect. Especially the first.
I don’t know about this assessment. I think German girls are far quicker to get out of their clothes than say, Italians, who have plenty of social and religious guilt to spare.
Spanish women I found to be very cliquish, and you must know Spanish. The French are on their own planet of course, although they are really worldly, and can be great when not in their own country. Also, if you get an in as a friend with one, or get a woman started, they will gladly go the distance. I also had some decent luck in Switzerland, which is a gorgeous country. People yack about how pricey it is, but going low budget in Swiss, you still get to see some of the best sights around, although it isn’t exactly edgy or underground, but it can be spectacular and outdoorsy.
My experience has also been that women of all nations are much more open when they are on vacation as well, so you might do best meeting them on a mediterranean island, although you will be competing with squads of idiots, so find a place with more women and less men (good luck). Scandinavia used to be a great picking ground for a guy with dark hair. I don’t know if this is over now, or if the forbidden fruit rule applies. For my taste, I saw more consistent hot girls in Denmark than anywhere else. Just one after another, tall, built, every hair color. I saw blondes in Denmark that would be rare 10s here in the USA, and they weren’t models even.
Holland FInland also good. Czech is great and also generates the modelsque types. The deeper east you go from there, things start entering the twilight zone of safety and language and hassle. Eastern Europe is not a small place either. It’s quite large.

I’ve been living in Germany for 15 years and I would agree with the writer of this article 100% on the most important issues. However, he didn’t make the distinction between Germans living in the former East or West Germany. I have many very good German friends, both make and female, and if you have the right attitude you won’t have a problem finding friends or a girlfriend here. ´
My advice though if you’re interested in German women is to move to the former West German states. East German women over 30 in particular are generally man-haters or have major anti-male psychological complexes, have the personalities of rottweilers, and look like bulldogs. Also as to German men being beta and Germans not being competitive…This is pretty much a joke. German men are silent agressors type of people and society is very competitive, this is why their companies are taking over Europe. German men also tend to be more masculine IMHO than their latin counterparts (France/Italy), just go to a bar/beer hall or football game.
German women IMHO are not very attractive and very masculine. I think its always been like this in all German history, its not a post-WW2 thing.
