Smallpox ranks among the world’s most terrible diseases. Over the centuries, it has killed or scarred hundreds of millions of people. It seems to have originated in the tropical zones of sub-Saharan Africa or India, and spread along trade routes to China and Europe. Virologists suspect that the disease was a mutation of a pox-like virus that afflicted domesticated animals.
Epidemics are recorded in ancient times, in the Middle Ages, and in the early modern period. But it was in the New World that it reaped its most deadly harvest. The disease decimated the native American populations of Mexico and Peru, and greatly assisted in the Spanish conquest. The Indians had developed no natural resistances to the disease, and were very nearly wiped out by it.
Experience with the disease had brought some progress in controlling it. In China and the Near East, it was known that exposing an uninfected person to smallpox scabs or pustules could act as some insurance from catching the disease. The Chinese method was to have a patient inhale a powder made from ground scabs; in the Middle East, a “wet” smallpox scab was rubbed into a cut in the person’s skin. This method came to be called “variolation,” a word derived from the medical term for the smallpox virus (variola).
Variolation was popularized in England and the American colonies through the efforts of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, a former sufferer of the disease who managed to cure herself. She accompanied her husband to Constantinople in 1716 and observed doctors practice variolation on patients. After returning to England in 1718, she worked hard to have the practice adopted, but progress was slow.
It seems strange to us today why it took so long for “obvious” medical treatments to become generally accepted, but it must be remembered that the medical field is an establishment like any other, with vested interests that can look on innovations with suspicion. We need only remember how long it took for the cure for scurvy to become recognized, despite the fact that sailors in the Middle East and India had been eating fresh citrus as a preventative for centuries.
There was a terrible outbreak of smallpox in Boston in 1721 that killed 15% of the population. The numbers would have been even worse had it not been for the efforts of Cotton Mather, a scholarly clergyman and amateur scientist. Mather personally vaccinated dozens of families, often at great physical risk to himself. The risk came not from the virus, but from attempted assaults on his person by uninformed people who distrusted the procedure.
But it would be Edward Jenner who finally brought the disease to heel. He did not “invent” vaccination, but he did figure out a new and improved way of administering it. Jenner’s discovery began, like many great discoveries, with an observation that not many had thought much of.
Jenner was a maverick country doctor and a man of many interests. He noticed that milkmaids in Gloucestershire often contracted a mild infection called cowpox from rubbing the nipples of lactating cows. Once the maids had cowpox, they never contracted smallpox. Could there be some connection between these two facts?
Jenner believed there was. The idea came to him that if he infected a patient with the mild cowpox, he could thereby safeguard them from the deadly smallpox. But proving this was another matter. Jenner did not have an advanced knowledge of the immune system or virology. He had intuition and conviction, and these proved to be enough.
In a risky procedure (done apparently without his patient’s consent), Jenner infected an eight-year old boy named James Phipps with cowpox. He took a drop of fluid from a cowpox scab on the wrist of a milkmaid named Sarah Nelms, and rubbed it on the skin of his test subject Phipps.
He noticed the appearance of the disease, but it went away in about ten days. He then infected the boy directly with smallpox. And nothing happened. “Several months afterwards,” he wrote in a paper published in 1798, “he was again inoculated with variolous matter, but no sensible effect was produced in the constitution.”
So the procedure worked. Jenner did receive some castigation for his human experiments, but the criticism subsided when the results began to become evident. Jenner’s method was much more efficient and practical than the old ones. Parliament in 1802 and 1807 funded him lavishly, and he set about eradicating the disease in England.
Smallpox practically vanished in Europe and America soon after, and its control is practically taken for granted in the modern era. Jenner’s discovery was relevant not only in controlling smallpox, but also for the practice of vaccination in general.
In May 1980, the World Health Organization formally certified smallpox as “eradicated.” This feat was due largely to the techniques pioneered by Jenner. We should note that eradication of a disease is not a permanent condition. If future generations fail to heed the lessons of the past, they will find smallpox—“the speckled monster”—more than willing to return.

If one is to find a cure (not treatment) for cancer today, you can bet your bottom dollar that it will be met with resistance and be flat out rejected by the medical establishment. Much worse than finding that cure for small pox back then. Why? Because of the loss in revenues and research money. All that dries up. Oncology would be a thing of the past. People would be out of work.
Over $100 billion (globally) was spent just on treatments in 2014. Combined with research funds ($5 billion from just America), plus funds from the last 20 years, the cancer industry is worth well over $1 trillion now.

If it turned out that fluctuations in climate are natural and not the result of industry, then a big chunk of academia would get flushed down the toilet.

It’s the political interests who have an intellectual and financial stranglehold (that they profit from immensely) based on the ignorance of the general public. I told someone that the trends if the warming were to indefinitely continue call for small amounts of flooding in 80 years, not 10-20 like Gore’s ridiculous model. He said bias was getting in the way of me thinking clearly. I am a biochemist and he is a journalist. Political elites will always weaponize arrogant ignorance.
I’ve rarely met a ‘real’ scientist who took the doomsday predictions too seriously, instead preferring to take a skeptical approach (they beat jumping to conclusions out of you pretty fast in graduate school for chemistry). I have known many liberal arts majors to immediately state it as true and tell me I was ‘unscientific’ for being skeptical.
I studied neuroscience in grad school and know that academic science based on sampling methods and probabilities are really just all about doing t-tests that pass alpha of 0.05. I’ve published results which passed statistical tests that I’m still not entirely convinced of because ultimately what is defined as statistically significant is arbitrary.
Chemistry seems like a much more “hard” science, where reproducing results can be much more reliable. I’d like to think there is less variability in a population of hydrogen atoms than there is with people.
My point is… Just because a study comes out that says global warming is happening doesn’t mean it absolutely is. I haven’t reviewed enough of the research to draw any conclusions, and I think you’d agree that most liberal arts majors haven’t either.
Psychology is part of the umbrella I termed ‘liberal arts’ and unfortunately that bleeds over into justified areas of study like neuroscience. Your field has a very high retraction rate for papers, so your gut feeling was right. I am sorry it turned out that way; I enjoyed studying neuroscience on the side. The chart at the end of the first link is most telling to me. The only treatment a majority of doctors would accept for a critical illness like cancer is pain medication, with 60% even refusing an IV. Why? They know sitting in a hospital bed with a plastic tube penetrating your arm is no way to live (or die).
Its sobering reading. I watched my mother go through it, but she was only 60 and wanted to live. She had grandchildren and stuff, but I have no dependents and have often thought I would just enjoy my last days rather than take that shit. If it got too much there is always self-inflicted euthanasia if you don’t have any spiritual problems with it.
You have a greater chance of surviving, but the best treatment we have for cancer is simply a chemical that kills cancer cells faster than normal cells. Side effects are debilitating nausea, partial to full liver failure, and hearing loss. I’d recommend it for about 5-6 different forms of cancer, where it raises the survival from 5-10% to 55-85%. Find different treatment for the others or just make peace with it. Dr. Low at my alma mater just created a fluorescence technique for ‘highlighting’ (it glows green) cancerous tissue based on Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (it binds to a protein found in cancer cells and then fluoresces), making surgery around 50% more successful in terms of full remission.
We’ll get there eventually. Cancer has a creepy way of mutating to avoid a lot of treatments.
It’s a bit different now. We have only come across one such ‘miracle’ cure. And like Jenner above, we still don’t know how it works (well, we are stuck between two possibilities after discovering its basic mechanism). Cisplatin cures 85% of cases of testicular cancer, a disease that formerly had a 90% mortality rate. If we had the medicine when Lance armstrong had the disease, he would still have both balls.
The point is that this was discovered and implemented quickly. Most doctors can move onto different areas of research, and the current structure of research catches people trying to impede the pursuit of truth in around 10 years. Of course, this is in the hard sciences, liberal arts are a wreck with retractions everywhere. The only time I have seen a field of research compromised by the researchers is with Caltech’s research into the incorporation of metals into metalloproteins by the body. They have been publishing just to spite eachother between two view points for a while now.

I need to clarification on something, vaccination is not 100% effective. A small amount of the population can’t produce a proper immune response or can not get vaccination. Vaccines work by providing a weaker stain of virus in a system, so the body can develop a immune response to the virus. When a person get reinfected by the virus, the body is prime to neutralize and destroy the virus. The purpose of the vaccination in general is to provide what is call a herd immunity, a population that can fight viral infection and prevent creating a human resourceful for a virus to spread. There is lot of factors determining a vaccination will work in population, but it is best tool of prevention against epidemics.

The measles vaccine was licensed in 1965. In the forty years prior to that — starting 1920, well after the invention of the flush toilet, antibiotics, hospitals, sanitation — the incidence of the disease was wildly up and down, as one expects with an uncontrolled condition. After the vaccine was introduced, the reported cases drop away to almost zero. Not mortality – reported cases.

I’m a firm believer in letting the body build its own immune system, as it results in a more robust individual. There are some things I vaccinate my children for, such as diptheria, tetanus, or smallpox, or hep C if that’s ever a thing (but never MMR due to reasons stated above). The rest they can get exposed to in their lives or get vaccinated after they have developed their brain and immune systems.

Prior to the age of vaccination people were basically living with dead bodies and fecal matter all around them (including in their water supply). Vaccines just piggybacked that trend, and a lot of diseases which killed more people than the vaccinated ones (ie. scarlet fever) also went away at the same time but were never discussed in the subsequent medical history since they didn’t have vaccines.
Sir, do you have an understanding of the function of the immune system? Do the terms innate, adaptive or immune memory mean anything to you? Do you understand the function of B and and T lymphocytes, MHC antigen presentation, let alone Natural killer cells, Eosinophils, basophils, mast cells etc. Because if you do not then your point is moot.

Or that the populations in the Philippines have less effective immune systems, less “herd” immunity from vaccinations, or encountered a differing strain of the wild virus?

A lot of anti-feminism pages have been taken down lately. It’s almost as though Facebook has an agenda.
Most of what happened with the smallpox vaccine was fabricated and the story we have of it is false.
A doctor named suzanne humphries went and dug up the original source documents that were written at the time from the basement of the library of congress and yale and then put together a book describing the actual story.
If you look through the actual history of what happened, it’s very difficult to argue in favor of smallpox vaccine.
The books name is Dissolving Illusions.
Short version however is there was never any evidence the vaccine worked, Jenner faked a lot of stuff for $ (And covered up people being seriously injured), the vaccine injured and maimed a lot of people, to the point there were citizen uprisings against the useless vaccine, and the places that got rid of smallpox were the ones that banned the vaccine and instead instituted quarantining.
But don’t take my word for this. Read the book and check it’s sources. Best thing that has been written on the subject as far as I can tell.
And that’s why today everybody is dying from smallpox. Because others banned the cure.

Most (not all) vaccines are an utter fraud, forced on an unsuspecting populace through fear and intimidation. The sordid history of how this fraud is perpetuated is well-documented.
He is right. There are 5 nobel prce laureates who have publicly doubted vaccines. Only because it’s mainstream does not mean it is true.
Doubting is fine. But I need actual evidence.
There are mountains of evidence – from CDC Whistleblowers, to massive studies (just not publicized) – to many many additional data points. You would have to research it – plenty of information out there. Many MDs are furious after finding out the full scope.
I personally even question the entire preamble of vaccines, since the immune system is way more complex than it seemed in 1800. They are recently even finding micro-bacteria and signs of the vailidity of pleomorphism. Also even if vaccines were 100% safe and did not include hundreds of toxins and human-grown antigens, then sicknesses tend to shift to lesser known viral strains.
Vaccines in the future will be recognized correctly as a major medical error that became a worldwide scam for other reasons than the health of the common man. Frankly it does not even take that much thinking prowess to debunk most pro-vaccine claims as bullshit.
So show me.

Here is a list of some of the damaging ingredients in the vaccines on the market today:
MSG, antifreeze, phenol (used as a disinfectant), formaldehyde (cancer causing and used to embalm), aluminum (associated with alzheimer’s disease and seizures), glycerin (toxic to the kidney, liver, can cause lung damage, gastrointestinal damage and death), lead, cadmium, sulfates, yeast proteins, antibiotics, acetone (used in nail polish remover), neomycin and streptomycin. And the ingredient making the press is thimerosol (more toxic than mercury, a preservative still used in many vaccines, not easily eliminated, can cause severe neurological damage as well as other life threatening autoimmune disease). These vaccines are grown and strained through animal or human tissue, like monkey and dog kidney tissue, chick embryo, calf serum, human diploid cells (the dissected organs of aborted fetuses), pig blood, horse blood and rabbit brain.

3. Fully Vaccinated Children are the Unhealthiest, Most Chronically Ill Children, while vaccinated children are found to be more chronically ill than unvaccinated children with rates for autism, ear infections, ADHD, asthma and allergies as much as 30% higher than unvaxed children.
4. Countries Are Waking Up to the Dangers of Vaccines
In 1975, Japan raised its minimum vaccination age to 2 years old, The country’s infant mortality subsequently plummeted to such low levels that Japan now enjoys one of the lowest level in the Western world (#3 at last look). In comparison, the United States’ infant mortality rate is #33.
In Australia, the flu vaccine was recently suspended (April 2010) for children under 5 because an alarming number of children were showing up in the emergency rooms with febrile convulsions or other vaccine reactions within hours of getting this shot.
5. A Number of Vaccines Have Already Had Problems, some have Been Removed from the Market
Brief list of some of the vaccines that have caused serious injury in recent years:
– GlaxoSmithKline removed the Lyme Disease vaccine (reported symptoms worse than the disease itself such as incurable arthritis or neurological impairment).
– The Rotavirus vaccine (Rotashield) was removed (life threatening bowel obstruction or twisting of the bowl).

At least 1600 adverse events have been reported since its approval in 2006, yet doctors are continuing to recommend this shot to their patients. Why this vaccine hasn’t already been removed from the market is astonishing.
If the vaccines above have had serious problems, the others probably do too as vaccine manufacturers follow the same basic formula when coming up with each new shot.
6. You Can Always Get Vaccinated, But You Can Never Undo a Vaccination
Procrastination is usually considered a character flaw, but in the case of vaccination, delaying the decision for as long as possible plays to your advantage. The longer you wait to vaccinate your child, the better. A child’s immune system continues to develop for years after birth. The blood/brain barrier does not fully develop until adolescence. The longer you wait, the more likely your child’s immune system will be able to handle the onslaught with minimal damage.
If you don’t know what to do, don’t do anything!

Interesting. I am retired in the mountains of Mexico, in the Central Highlands. For several years, I have been doing genealogy work on my wife’s family history.
As a result of this, I dig into the Mormon database on births; deaths; and marriages. There were so many smallpox deaths that I took the death records of a nearby county (municipio) and put all deaths for 1877 into a spreadsheet.
There were in 1877 in that municipio 258 deaths recorded. 167 of them were from smallpox. Most smallpox deaths were kids, and those who did not die did not get it again. One woman who was 25 died of smallpox. She must have missed it for years to succumb in the end.
Note that of the 270 deaths, 167 were from smallpox which means, obviously, that 103 were not from smallpox. In 1874, when there was no epidemic of smallpox, the municipio had 89 deaths, a slightly smaller number than those who died from other than smallpox in 1877.
Average age at death that year was 9.2 years
The estimated population of that municipio then was around 5,000, extrapolated from the number of births each year, this is somewhat predictable in that primitive society. I cannot remember and am not going to take time to look it up. But, vaguely it seems that the primitive population back then tended to have 50 births per 1000 population each year, and so there must have been around 250 births a year, but those numbers depend upon a not totally reliable memory.
Between 1871 and 1877, there were an average of 234 baptisms a year in that municipio. Not all kids were baptized, but in a largely Catholic area, most would have been. Thus, I estimated population around 5,000.

The vaccine maimed and injured people up until the 19th century. They died and were injured from erysipelas, tetanus, septicaemia, and tuberculosis.
Those injuries did not change the fact that the less serious cowpox gave immunity to the far more deadly smallpox.
They did not have the means to prevent contamination, less knowledge of contagions like staph and tetanus, and no means to ensure the earliest vaccines were sterile.
There was also the issue before modern technology in that it was much harder to be sure one was using the correct cowpox to vaccinate. If one accidently used the wrong virus, death could happen.

A flu vaccine is silly because flu virus mutates. The vaccine must be given yearly and even then, one must hope they only come into contact with that specific strain that entire season.
A chicken pox vaccine for children is somewhat pointless, chicken pox in children is not deadly or damaging. The vaccine is not pointless if given to an older adult or teen. I have a brother who did not contract the pox as a child, but as an adult. Chicken pox in adults can be deadly and at the very least, highly scarring and disfiguring. He could have benefited from the vaccine as a teenager.
A walking pneumonia vaccine is another like chicken pox. Most healthy adults need not worry about walking pneumonia, but the vaccine might be preferred by an elderly person in a nursing home or a person with a chronic pulmonary illness.
As far as traditional vaccines infants receive… Many children are at some point in situations that tetanus or diphtheria is a real concern; an example is if you let your kid outside, look away for ten minutes, only to look back and see your kid putting dirt in their mouth… Or when your kid jumps in a pond of fairly stagnant water because it was 90 degrees and they thought it would cool them off.

That vaccine carries a small percentage of human blood albumen, i.e. proteins. Very similar to prions, the infective agents of mad cow, scrapie, and chronic wasting disease in deer and elk.
These proteins are human. They go right through the blood brain barrier. You did not have this version of MMR, but most people from 85 or 88 forward did, which is why you see big autism diagnosis spikes when they were implemented.

The definition of autism changed is what happened. In the late 70’s and earlier, Autism was retardation. If you got the diagnoses of autism, it meant you were retarded.

I understand that 60 percent of patients who are vaccinated for Hepatitis B will lose detectable antibodies to Hepatitis B within 12 years. I understand that in the VAERS, there were 1,080 total reports of adverse reactions from Hepatitis B vaccine in 1996 in the 0-1 year age group, with 47 deaths reported.
I understand that 50 percent of patients who contract Hepatitis B develop no symptoms after exposure. I understand that 30 percent will develop only flu-like symptoms and will have lifetime immunity.
