How To Build Social Influence Like A Cult Leader

Chizuo Matsumoto was born in 1955 to a large, poor family in Japan. He was born with glaucoma and subsequently lost all sight in his left eye, and retained only partial vision in his right eye. This caused him to attend a school for the blind, and pursue a career in acupuncture – a traditional Japanese occupation for the blind.

His acupuncture education led him to studying Chinese fortune telling and meditation, and this eventually instilled a belief in him that he possessed supernatural powers. In 1984, Matsumoto changed his name to Shoko Asahara and started Aum Shinrikyo, a group that began as a simple meditation and yoga class in his one bedroom apartment.

Shoko quickly became more radical. In 1992, he declared himself to be “Christ” and preached a belief system that combined aspects of Christianity and yoga with the writings of Nostradamus. He promised his rapidly growing group of followers that he would take upon himself the sins of the world, and, in turn, absolve them of their sins and transfer to them a set of supernatural powers.

Over the next few years, the group continued to attract more members, and, at the same time, controversy and attention from the Japanese public. Leading up to 1995, Shoko and Aum Shinrikyo were involved in various murders of members who tried to leave, assassination attempts of heads of other religious sects, kidnappings, and weapons manufacturing.

In 1995, the group, now numbering as many as 9,000 followers in Japan and 40,000 worldwide, reached its boiling point. On March 20, Shoko ordered a number of the group’s members to release sarin, a deadly nerve gas agent, onto five lines of the Tokyo subway. 13 people died, 50 were injured, and nearly 1000 temporarily went blind. He sits on death row in a Japanese prison cell to this day.

You must speak in terms of their values and interests

Despite creating a violent cult, and using it for evil intentions, Shoko demonstrates a powerful concept that nearly all persuasive leaders throughout history took advantage of: speaking to other people in terms of their own interests.

The fact is that humans are inherently selfish. We care about our own lives and our own success. And this isn’t a bad thing – we all need to take good care of our bodies and minds in order to prosper. But you must avoid the trap of becoming too self-centered and subsequently losing the ability to focus on other people.

Shoko gained his following by preaching something that was valuable to prospective members – forgiveness of sins and the promise of supernatural spiritual powers. Bear in mind, his prospective members were religious minded people with an inclination to believe controversial spiritual prophecies. He took advantage of this and gave them what they wanted – forgiveness and power.

When you deal with people, you must do the same. You must realize what it is that they want, and you must give it to them.

No, I don’t mean that you should physically give them material gifts like money or cars. I also don’t mean that you should offer them false promises to exploit them, like Shoko did. I used him as an example merely to demonstrate the power of this simple technique.

What I do mean is that you must be able to relate to the interests of whoever you’re talking to. You must be able to identify and speak to what it is that motivates them. Doing this correctly will grant you instant influence and respect in their lives. It will allow you to open them up and operate on a far higher level than the man who simply drones on talking about his own problems and desires, both annoying and tiring his conversational partner. It will set you apart.

After you’ve built a strong mental and psychological foundation by believing that you’ll succeed, and adopting the body language of a dominant individual, you must turn your attention outwards. Focusing your conversation on the other person is the final piece of the puzzle to creating an undeniable presence.

My Experience

I haven’t started my own personal cult, but I have consciously used this principle many times. The freshest example in my mind is the last time I asked for a raise.

The single biggest mistake most guys make when asking for a raise is talking in terms of their own interests and accomplishment. On second thought, the biggest mistake guys make is not having the balls to ask for a raise in the first place. But when they do, they tend to fail miserably.

Put yourself in the shoes of an employer. If one of your workers comes to you and asks for more money, you sure as hell expect him to convince you that he’s worth it. The last thing you want to hear is about how he’s been working more hours or just had his biggest month in sales. Yes, these things please you, but in less he considering leaving immediately, it won’t give you much reason to throw more of your money his way.

You must take the opposite approach and talk to your employer in terms of his interests. In my recent case, this meant telling him that if he increased my hourly rate by 33% I would be able to allocate more hours to his firm (as opposed to my other gigs). I continued to explain that this would translate to the ability for me to work on a large new project the company was just taking on, and I knew they were short-handed. This would allow them to complete the project far sooner, and in a far more efficient manner.

He immediately saw the immense value I would bring to the table by granting me a raise, and promptly gave it to me – all because I spoke to him in terms of his interests, not my own.

Take Action

By focusing your conversations on other people and their interests, you’re able to effectively use your mental confidence and strong physical presence to build influence, respect, and rapport in others. In short, it’s the third wheel of the presence triangle that, when used together, will allow you assume the identity of socially dominant man.

To implement this principle into your life, simply start to approach all of your conversations with the purpose of speaking to your partner’s interests. If you’re asking for a raise, this means talking about what you can do for the company.

If you’re trying to build rapport with a stranger, this is finding out what they like to do, and then asking them more about it. For example, anyone who talks to me about fitness or entrepreneurship immediately engrosses me into the conversation and quickly establishes themselves as a friend.

The applications for this concept are endless. If you’re trying to build attraction with a girl you just met, you should push to learn facts about her, which you can in turn use to tease her. Most men make the deadly mistake of trying to talk themselves up or talk about things that they might have in common with the girl. Stop. She doesn’t care about you yet. She cares about herself – use this to your advantage, make her feel comfortable in your presence, and then tease her and touch her to build attraction and make her feel dominated by your presence. Droning on about your cool job will only serve to bore her.

  1. Over the years, I have known many people in the “new age” crowd: reikki, meditation, astrology, channeling, etc. Their delusional thoughts are often frightening. They are also predominantly female in number.
I have come to realize that feminism and new age go together like peanut butter and jelly. There are no rules, no shaming, no responsibility for your actions in the new age sector. If you have committed an error, just do a meditation to cleanse yourself of guilt. Read a horoscope to forget about the consequences of your twisted logic. It’s all completely self serving, with everybody bullshitting one another. Nobody has the courage to tell another person they’re too fat, too stupid, etc. because that would hurt emotions. And in the world of new age, emotions are deified. To speak against emotions, is to speak against God.
The new age talking points then align nicely with second wave feminism. Nearly any emotion she has is justified, since she has been oppressed by the patriarchy. If one woman feels uncomfortable, that is sufficient proof for why we should enact large scale change. Feeling, feeling, feeling. No adherence to logic, justice, or critical thinking.

      1. What those bitches do or think have a DIRECT impact in your life, even if you are a faggot, which you most certainly are. Among many, many things, google Affirmative action.

        1. Right, it has no impact on our lives – except for religion, politics, economics, education, media…
I’ll stop there before the list gets too long.

    1. I wouldn’t include meditation in with the others. There is empirical evidence that meditation provides real benefits. The problem most people make is that they buy into the ‘spiritual’ chakra/lifeforce/chi/whatever crap instead of seeing it for what it is: a mental workout. Much like playing chess or problem solving will increase your critical thinking ability, so can meditation provide increased willpower, focus and attention, a feeling of calm, it can lessen your fears.

      1. I will give you that. Meditation can have its benefits.
I draw the line at Reptillian shape shifters, however.

    2. I’ve seen this in many “spiritual” communities too. While many of the practices they teach can be useful, there are major blind spots you could drive a truck through.

    3. Oh yeah. I have a lot of that also.
One more to add to the list – watch out for any chick that is into Kabbalah!
From what I have been able to gather, Kabbalah was at one time an ancient sect in Judaism. It seems to have been marginalized within Judaism, I guess for having so many goofy ideas. But, hah!, that means it is perfect for new age “spirituality.”
It was totally fucking bizarre how much she got into it. She’d go to their temple thingy every Monday night for 2 hours. Then for an hour or so on Friday nights. And sometimes even on Saturdays. I didn’t see any of this made her any better at sex, cooking, or meeting my needs generally, so it was therefor a waste of her time. She was on of these chicks with a fucked up family background, which seems to be the profile of the chicks that get into new age nonsense.
She was always talking about how important it was for her to bring “light” into her life. I’d ask her what they fuck she meant by “light.” She’d look at me like I was from another planet. In Kabbalah, they have this concept they call “the Opponent.” Turns out, the Opponent is your ego. So they are constantly striving to get beyond their own ego. Naturally, every time this woman did not get what she wanted from me, and especially when I did not agree with her, she would accuse me of having an ego.
I would say, “Why yes I have an ego. That is how I survive. A human without an ego cannot survive.” That would throw her into tizzy fit.
Glad to be rid of her and all that Kabbalah bull shit.

      1. Good. Another one to add to the list.
These chicks use their religion as a smoke screen. In the end it’s all take and no give.
Cook dinner? She is too busy having her aura read at the temple.
Clean the house? Sorry. She has to do a tarot reading for a girl that just got out of an abusive relationship.
        On and on.
Somehow though, if you are springing for an expensive dinner, she manages to clear her schedule. The world does not need saving at the precise moment your wallet is open.

    4. I would also include any modern religion (Christianity, Judaism, Muslim, Hinduism, etc etc) in the same category as astrology and tarot card reading.
It’s all esoteric, new age, escapism bullshit where you ‘pray’ away your problems and forgo reality in favour of bronze age zombie preachings.

      1. I won’t deny that there is a fairy tell element to all religion. However, at least with the ones you mentioned, there is an attempt to shame people away from poor behavior.

        1. I disagree, these religions encourage all kinds of abject depraved behaviour, such as mutilating the penises of adolescent boys, forcing people to starve themselves, indoctrinating small children using the fear of eternal damnation etc etc

        2. “these religions encourage all kinds of abject depraved behaviour, such as mutilating the penises of adolescent boys”
          True. Can’t disagree with that.

        3. I just read today that circumcision can decrease your odds of getting AIDS when you fuck prostitutes. God must know something.

  2. @ Major styles:
“I have come to realize that feminism and new age go together like peanut butter and jelly.”
TRUE. You see this everywhere. A lot of cults are all associated with feminism, primarily new age occult, tarot card reading, palm reading, divination, Ouija boards, sexual cults, Satanism, etc etc.
“Read a horoscope to forget about the consequences of your twisted logic.
No adherence to logic, justice, or critical thinking.”
You see it on university and college campuses. The young generation of women are all following this medium of spirituality. Satanism and cult worship has triumphed everywhere.

    1. “You see it on university and college campuses. The young generation of women are all following this medium of spirituality.”
I worked in higher education for many years – it is endemic. “Cat calling” is a serious crime because some woman, somewhere on earth, was offended by it. Objectification of women in the media is a serious issue because some obese gal felt bad when she watched a skinny model on television. And on and on and on. These type of articles fill the textbooks of Sociology, English, etc.
Meanwhile, if some man got screwed over, we’ll just ride that off as some guy who clearly hates women.
Traditional colleges have become a feminist, man-bashing pulpit.

      1. Universities are becoming or have already become totalitarian. Free speech exists only if you spout the party (liberal) line. Many of the old soviet jokes that my relatives used to say have become applicable to the current state of affairs at American universities and in some cases America itself.

  3. “Most men make the deadly mistake of trying to talk themselves up or talk about things that they might have in common with the girl. Stop. She doesn’t care about you yet.”
    YES

    1. The reality is that women only care about themselves. Period. You want to be succesful with women, it doesn’t about you, ask about her and she will go on for hours and hours and then pretend to be interested and fuck her.
Women never love men, just the attention

      1. “Women never love men, just the attention”
That should be a bumper sticker or something. Classic.

        1. Now your giving me ideas LOL. But its true. Here is the thing. If a man breaks up with a woman or cheats on her, she may always wonder about the one who got away. But if the woman breaks it up with the man, she is basically dead to her. It is very easy for her to move on because she never truly loved him, just the attention, and usually these women monkey branch to another man, and don’t let one go until they already found another. By the time a woman tells you she is breaking up with you, she has probably already found a new boyfriend who is showering her in attention.

        2. There was some study related to that. Women instinctively have tons of freinds, and instantly bond with women they hardly even know. These become their emotional support groups. Men don’t do that, period, and our culture tells us that we need women to emotionally bond to. So men become disposeable to women by the situation. Yet women are constantly sold as the holders of the hearth and love. But it’s totally the opposite. They also believe the crap about being experts on love and relationships, but they’re so self-involved that they have no clue what getting to know someone or maintaining a relationship is about. In the end, they’re only in it for themselves.

      2. “The reality is that women only care about themselves. Period. You want to be succesful with women, it doesn’t about you, ask about her and she will go on for hours and hours and then pretend to be interested and fuck her.
Women never love men, just the attention”
        Fuckin’ gospel.
This is why guys have to understand that attention is currency to a female. Just merely engaging her in conversation is attention. And just because she is enjoying hearing you speak doesn’t mean jack-shit. you’re nothing more than a lark of the moment.
This is why I will not speak to any female without a directive in mind. And essentially I have to have a reason to engage, because attention is currency to a hormonal driven beast.

        1. And even if they’re not interested in you. Go to a bar and talk one up, and before she even gives you both the chance of getting to know you, she’s blown you off. That’s an ego boost for her. Because of the junk in her head, she’s now validated and feels powerful. Girls collect those situations in their heads and run them through when they’re insecure and need reassurance.
And you might have only been trying to ask her about the parking outside or something. No matter, they live in their own weird world.

      3. Saw a tinder date or something at the coffee shop the other day. The girl just went on and on, and the poor guy just sat there like, “what the hell is this.” He couldn’t get a word in except an occasional monosyllable.

  4. I did a project on these guys a few years back in a Politics class. Fascinating bunch. I asked my chick at the time who was a Chemistry major if she knew how to make sarin and she went in depth telling me how. I’m glad I’m out of that relationship.

  5. great article. You can ace most interviews by applying this advice, by first developing a simple connection with your interviewer (notice something about them that you can relate to…even if you don’t know much about it) then create a rapport and basically interview the interviewer

    1. Look, all this “give other people what they need and they’ll give you
what you need” crap is bullshit. You can’t divorce a cult leader from
his violent and sociopathic methods. The writer of this article makes the fatal mistake of thinking he can do the same thing as this Japanese dude, except without all the bloodshed. WRONG. That dude’s power FLOWED from his ability and willingness to be violent and ruthless. You want to know what brings the ultimate power? Fear. That’s the fundamental truth that all gang leaders, cult leaders, and tyrants figured out and followed. And the fact that we have so many people cowering in fear all the time is precisely what lets them gain power. If there’s no one to fear them, they have no power.
Don’t be the cult leader. Be the guy who stands up to the cult leader. Be the Leonidas, be the Husayn.

      1. So Dread Game is wrong and stopping people from gettng what they want and deserve is right? A great man realizes most men are not. The masses want to be in fearful awe. You breed what you subsidize.
Dark Enlightenment: All people are NOT compatible, much less equal.

        1. Yes, it’s morally wrong. Part of being red-pill is realizing that as a man you should have a moral compass. My moral compass is opposed to scum and lowlives and pimps going around and intimidating the weak and powerless into submission. Why? Because power must only be in the hands of those who care and are responsible. If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. If you’re not standing up to scum, you’re part of their power sphere, like it or not.

      2. I agree, and did not say that being a cult leader was a wise career choice. Was referring to establishing a rapport with job interviewer.
Pathological narcissists are very good at reading the needs of someone and utilizing that information to manipulate them.

        1. “Pathological narcissists are very good at reading the needs of someone and utilizing that information to manipulate them”
How does one know if someone is trying to manipulate you? Answer: when that fuckin’ hole in their face starts moving. Seriously. Always look for an agenda that way you can decipher what’s really going on in any conversation.

      3. “You want to know what brings the ultimate power? Fear”
I hear what you’re saying, man, as also been stated that fear is the ultimate form of respect the human animal understands. But then there are the guys that are like the famous mystic (or highly regined bullshit artist as dome see him) Rasputin. He was never violent, not like a Jim Jones cult leader. He more or less had really good social enginerring skills that got him respect by some members of the Czars.

    1. We do need true husbandry, a hallmark of civilized patriarchy. You don’t seem to belong here, denigrating the Dark Triad and all. I don’t think RoK is Xian neo-reaction just yet.

      1. I didn’t realize that RoK encourages groupthink. Perhaps you’re the one who doesn’t belong here, since you think these freaks are beyond criticism.
Men who con, grin and wigger their way into power need to be weeded out of society. That’s why we’re in such a mess, because men like this have sold us out. Why do people sell out? They sell out for power. The only principle cult leaders follow is self-aggrandizement.

        1. Well, the old fashioned way to power was to just coerce people into submission with a bigger stick or more guns.
I suppose you could say there’s power in love, but that will get you crucified — literally.
          WWJD?

  6. Sounds a lot like Robert Greene in 48 Laws of Power. Law 27: Play on People’s Need to Believe to Create a Cultlike Following

  7. I think it would be pretty cool to have the ability to start a cult. You’d have 20 or even more chicks offering to give you a blow job, so they can swallow your holy semen.

  8. Thanks for showing us how to get a raise. Asking for it and saying you deserve it are the most original concepts I’ve ever heard of. Can’t wait to take that red pill!

  9. I love watching all these religion hating self described “scientist” (they probably think they are alphas as well lol) worshippers put down astrology as lacking or a joke.
I have studied it for 20 years and it’s pretty accurate if you use it for its purpose, the study of heavenly bodies that interact with humans.
I can pretty much tell if I am compatible with a female in one minute of knowing her birthdate and weighted to persue her.
Years ago someone somewhere did a study of marriages and astro signs.
    You know what they found?
The highest divorce rates were among gemini and Capricorn sun signs!
I have met one (yes, only one) couple, and they are over 80 or are still married with this astro combo.
    Astrology is science bitches.
Which makes its detractors worse then omegas.
    Funny, that.

    1. Astrology is nothing but Satan worship, short and simple. The occult elite practice astrology, among other things, because they worship Marduk (=Azazel, Lucifer, Samael, Satan etc) and they know astrology’s connection to Satan and his demonic cohorts. Astrology is forbidden in the Bible for a reason.
So by promoting astrology you are simply promoting Satan worship. I wouldn’t be surprised if you also rape and sacrifice babies, which to my understanding is something you Satan worshippers really like.
Oh, and you are the only bitch here, you elitistic twat.

  10. This is an excellent article and should be used in business, as well as life in general. This basic information just isn’t solidly understood by most people. Thanks and keep up the good work!

    1. So you want everyone to become a selfish, egotistic psychopath?
      No thanks.
We have more than enough of those types around.

      1. So you totally missed the point that appealing to people’s self interest helps all parties involved?

  11. Are you a business man or woman, are you a musician or an artist, politicians, do you want to be famous, have fame, riches, powerful, be a member of the Illuminati and make your dream come through, this is the chance for you now to become a member of the brotherhood and be known worldwide, if you are ready to become a member and realize your dream then contact us now @ [email protected] or visit us on our Facebook page at ILLUMINATI REIGNS. We reign forever!!!

    1. Sorry; Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost just extended an invitation to join the New York City branch of the Hellfire Club. The dress code for our female members is much more to my taste.

  12. Strange the best comment was deleated. 2014 was around the time I discovered this site. Billy Chubbs did a great piece on cult leader game. The site has evolved much. Back then there was a lot of ‘enjoy the decline’ sentiment. Now it’s been a year since two or more agree on ‘enjoying the decline’. Everyday now a great thread gets going that runs like the morning show. The humorous threads are like a red pill version of the hollywood squares and get the wiffle bats swinging and the think tanks warmed up. The GREAT MANBALL continues to grow, rolling, picking up twigs, earth, iron, lead and momentum.
    HAIL THE PATRIARCHY!!

  13. umm there is more to this. The technique described here is only useful in the early stages. It’s not domination. The example was an interaction with an employer. The employer is always dominant. The dominance comes later when the person transition to from this natural selfishness to a compete givingness. Then they serve your interests. How to make this transition is the real question…

  14. This article is interesting and I will need to read it again. I couldn’t get past acupuncture being a standard occupation for the blind in Japan. Can you explain to me how this isn’t at best a hilarious idea and at worst an insane and dangerous one?

    1. Elevated sense of touch and sense of the nodes and nerves I suppose. Most commonly it’s anyway not near eyes etc.
Its definitely a thing over there, and you can find blind acupuncturists in the US too, just do a quick search.
But I agree, on the face of it, it seems whacky.

      1. Then again, considering how many gifted musicians are blind, like Ray Charles, Andrea Bocelli, Jose Feliciano, Ronnie Millsap, and Stevie Wonder, so it’s logical that other senses are enhanced.

        1. I can almost buy that until my amygdala kicks in cave man style and says I’ll let ray Charles play the piano all day, but mother fucker comes near me with a needle and I’m gonna have to ask for a different technician.
I mean, I bet he didn’t even glance at that big poster that shows all the pressure points

  15. Can anyone of you guys inform me, what’s the general idea here?
Is this article worth reading ?

    1. Well yes, if you don’t care to read it yourself.
Main idea: A key to social influence is speaking to other people in terms of their interests, not yours.
