In late October of this year, a Gawker commenter using the alias “KillerMartinis” posted a short essay entitled “Why I Make Terrible Decisions, Or, Poverty Thoughts”. The title and article were written to suggest that the author had not only personally experienced the hardships described in the piece, but that impoverished conditions were essentially unsolvable…
I make a lot of poor financial decisions. None of them matter, in the long term. I will never not be poor, so what does it matter if I don’t pay a thing and a half this week instead of just one thing?
The article rapidly went viral and was reprinted at The Huffington Post. Many readers responded sympathetically and offers of help flooded in, since “KillerMartinis” portrayed herself as a Sisyphean victim of fate, constantly striving to manage the burden of raising small children while juggling two jobs and college courses. She eventually revealed herself as Linda Walther Tirado and set up a web page for donations, netting approximately $60,000. There are now talks of a book deal, so that she can “educate” Americans on what it’s like to be part of the Working Poor.
Unfortunately for her gullible donors and literary agent, Ms. Tirado is a fraud. She is in fact a middle-class child of privilege who has squandered numerous opportunities while trashing the parents that have bailed her out. America is a place where the poor can better themselves through wits and hard work; similarly, the well-to-do can lower themselves through stupidity and sloth. Ms. Tirado richly deserves a life of poverty, but she has avoided this fate mostly because her parents and in-laws understandably don’t want their grandchildren to live in filth and squalor.
Don’t believe this “poor” woman
I immediately doubted the veracity of the original article based on Ms. Tirado’s pseudonym (poor people generally don’t drink martinis—they drink beer and cheap liquor) and the fact that the article is written in the “Valley Girl” argot affected by spoiled middle and upper-class feminists.
It took a minimal amount of researching her Gawker comment history for me to verify my suspicion. See below for the damning evidence, which include excerpts from her original viral essay, her comment history, her follow-up article in the Huffington Post, and her donation page.

Her Gawker piece states this:
There’s no way to structure this coherently. They are random observations that might help explain the mental processes. I write things about poverty occasionally because I have a responsibility to. I feel a certain moral push to write about this thing that is alien to so many people, because I have the words to describe it. I know many people with much more interesting stories than mine, much more heart-wrenching and outrage-inducing, much more beautiful, much less messy. But the people living them did not go to the best schools and did not worry about their SAT scores and don’t know the word prose. They can’t tell their stories in a way that makes sense to the media system we’re working out. And so I wonder: maybe the thing I should be doing is translating their stories into something that uses the right words.

Rest is a luxury for the rich. I get up at 6AM, go to school (I have a full courseload, but I only have to go to two in-person classes) then work, then I get the kids, then I pick up my husband, then I have half an hour to change and go to Job 2. I get home from that at around 1230AM, then I have the rest of my classes and work to tend to. I’m in bed by 3. This isn’t every day, I have two days off a week from each of my obligations.
But in the past she wrote this:
She’s ungrateful about being bailed out by her parents
Her Gawker piece states this:
When I was pregnant the first time, I was living in a weekly motel for some time. I had a minifridge with no freezer and a microwave. I was on WIC.

When my parents came to be there for the birth and they saw what we were dealing with they moved us to Utah and gave us a trailer to live in. And then when we had our second and final daughter they helped us find a house to live in and now we have some space for once.
She lies about her living conditions

We have learned not to try too hard to be middle-class. It never works out well and always makes you feel worse for having tried and failed yet again.

She lies about workplace discrimination, exposes herself as pushy and ungrateful

I would make a super legal secretary, but I’ve been turned down more than once because I “don’t fit the image of the firm,” which is a nice way of saying “gtfo, pov.”
But in the past she wrote this:
You guys, I started my swanky job. It was fantastic except for the following: nobody seems to be sure exactly why I was hired, outside of one specific task that will take maybe 1/20 of my contracted hours. I got the feeling that they hoped I’d be able to branch them out into more outreach, but they’re really uncomfortable with moving into more overtly political strategies and I felt some pushback on anything resembling confrontation.

I am the queen of conditioning. I bleach/re-dye every month or so, so I keep four separate kinds of oil around. That way I can’t ever run out of them all at once.
She lies about her material possessions

“Free” only exists for rich people.
But in the past she wrote this:
Work issued me a phone, tablet, and laptop…
I had a phone screen malfunction and accidentally hit submit. I can’t even post an awesome gif because it’s a new phone and I haven’t figured out pasting.
She exposes herself as a total hypocrite, flunks out of college her first go-around, yet considers herself a literary genius

It’s great that there’s a bowl of condoms at my school, but most poor people will never set foot on a college campus. We don’t belong there.
But in the past she wrote this:
I’m on my first semester back since my late teens, when I earned myself a whopping .48 GPA by not going to class. Ever. So I’m on super-probation and the theory is that they don’t want us to overwhelm ourselves.
So, I get that we can’t close higher education to the masses and all, but does everyone struggle this hard with the stupid when they go back to school? I can’t believe how light the coursework is, or how much bitching commences every day after class.
She tricks the Sisterhood into paying her bar tab
Her Gawker piece states this:
I am not asking for sympathy.
Then a commenter named Greenheart wrote:
She [KillerMartinis] just mentioned that they’re gonna shut off her electricity in 6 hours. If those of us who can afford it all chipped in like $5 each, we could easily fix that problem with no more pain to ourselves than not getting any fancy coffee today. Who’s down?

In the end, fools and their money are soon parted.
Family members shouldn’t hold their breaths waiting for this spendthrift to pay her debts now that she has received a windfall.
I am not the first to poke holes in this woman’s testimony. Many of the doubters are fixating on whether her teeth are as bad as she claims. This is actually one of the few things Tirado is honest about (she posted a video showing the stomach-turning evidence). However, she received an insurance settlement and probably blew through the money instead of spending it on treatment.
The reason Tirado’s post went viral is not because it was well-written or based in reality, but because it provided “proof” for the bedrock belief of modern liberals that the poor are unable to wipe their own asses without help from a government program. I hope the soft-hearted people who gave money to this swindler (her take is $60,000) have learned their lesson.

The piece on Jenny Erickson was interesting, but depressingly familiar. I’m sure her husband thought he had found an “exception” to the modern American female because she claimed to be Christian and conservative. Their daughters will no doubt suffer because of the divorce, but hey, she was bored and has a chance to be famous with her blog. I wouldn’t be surprised if she gets a book deal as well.
Having done a bit of pro bono work for a number of poor it felt like BS when I read it. This is good work, these jackals need to be exposed.
As a dude from a poor background, I was both lucky and smart enough to go to college. I’ve rubbed elbows with people from both classes. She sounds too smart and self aware in her writing to be the real deal. People from poor socioeconomic backgrounds don’t harp on their economic status. They would rather have fun, party, dance, fuck, etc and never dwell on the consequences later. In other words you won’t find them on some intellectual blog talking about themselves articulately, like she does.

I’m an atheist but I see a lot of value in religion, from the personal level (reducing anxiety, helping face uncertainty, giving people meaning) to societal (promoting nuclear family unit, discouraging deviant behavior). Why was I expecting “Don’t Stop The Party” ?
That is where I disagree, I see no value in religion as it encourages war and primitive behavior, it sees scientific development has heresy, and sends scientists either into exile or into death, and it discourages freethought and freedom of thought. To me a nuclear bomb has more value that religion.
With all respect, I don’t think religion per se encourages war and primitive behavior, although certainly many religious people have fucked up the works throughout history, without a doubt. Religion is a human impulse, and like all human impulses it will manifest itself in imperfect, deeply flawed ways. Yes, there are biblical literalists out there, but it has been my experience (as a member of a mainstream church), that there are more atheists with a fundamentalist/literalist view of religion than actual religious people.
On a completely different note, I have found remarkable value in being a member of a mainstream church. I have close friendships with older, successful men who have been great mentors to me. I can pick up the phone right now and get through to CEOs, powerhouse lawyers, business owners, surgeons, etc. who I know from church. Whereas if I wasn’t a member of their church, my call wouldn’t make it past the receptionist. I meet once a week with a multi-millionaire for coffee and business and personal advice from him, and he says he’s honored to do so. I have made huge strides on self-improvement since becoming a red-piller. Having access to older, successful, male mentors who kick ass in their respective fields has been a godsend. Also, although my church takes a “liberal” stance on social rights, that stand is charitable. My mentors take no shit, and they rule their roosts.

I’ve always been amazed at how people can just take money like that and piss it all away so quickly. Ever seen the people who win millions in the lottery and then spend it all in a week? Yeah, being poor sucks and the system is unfair. The working poor ARE a real thing, and I feel badly for them. I don’t feel badly for people who are poor as a result of their own stupid actions, so I don’t feel badly for this fraud.
I happen to know several couples who would qualify as “working poor” by most reasonable definitions. Typically, both spouses work long hours at jobs that have offered few pay bumps after 10+ years of service. Because they have small children, college is not currently an option. Our current economic system offers little in the way of help to those who are hard-working, but not college material. I know other couples who both have bachelor’s degrees, but are stuck working jobs they are overqualified for. These people have pride, so they are not gaming the system; meanwhile, the welfare filth can “earn” 20-30,000 dollars worth of benefits by combining Section 8, “free” school lunches, food stamps, etc. I can show you neighborhoods where every child is on the school meal program, but every home has a 50 inch or greater flat screen TV.
I don’t have all the answers, but I believe enforcing our immigration laws would increase the wages of native-born unskilled workers far more than any hike in the minimum wage. A policy of “No husband, no welfare” would be even better. Then we would see how all the “independent” single mothers who “don’t need no man” would fare.
How is this even legal? I’ve heard stories of women convicted for telling people they had cancer and collecting money. It’s called fraud. This is hardly different. Someone from Gawker should press charges.

As someone who was homeless for ten months and never asked anyone for a dime, I called bullshit the moment I read this woman’s story. Not only is her attitude TERRIBLE, but she points the finger at others constantly.
She reminds me of someone who had been a good friend of mine since junior high school. When we were 12, I warned her at least once a week that she needed to brush her teeth. She blew me off, and by 25 she needed several teeth pulled and her “smile teeth” were foul. She cried about being too poor to afford dental care, and obviously it was everyone else’s fault that she was in this situation. Lack of self care, lack of foresight, lack of responsibility – these are the real culprits. This same chick turned down a free two-year scholarship and instead chose to squat in an abandoned house and cry about how she didn’t have running water or heat.
There are services for the poor. They aren’t great, but they exist. Basic dental, basic health coverage, and DHS will try to help you find work, housing, and education.

I don’t know anything about this woman outside of this article, but I do know of many many similar cases. The fact that women like this can get $60,000 money from idiots on the internet is the biggest case for the fact that idiots have too much money nowadays.

When I was an assistant to a professor in Uni (at 20 years old!, I gave classes to a room of 104 students on Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Marx, etc) one guy from a posh neighborhood came to ask for money from the fellow students because his father could not work because he had cancer (mind you, we have Universal Healthcare in Argentina, so most things are covered, and private insurance is relatively cheap also) and they could not maintain the same living conditions. I told them to get out of the classroom because I was giving a class, and lots of students gave me the evil eye.
I remember seeing this article too and thinking, “this sounds a little too bad to be true,” and it seems insulting to try and parlay that article into a website to raise you out of poverty via solicited donation. Then it all turns out to be a lie? Absolutely unforgivable behavior.

Reading Linda’s post, and all the support she is getting hurts my brain. She’s pathetic. Total victim mentality. Even if her story was 100% accurate, I still wouldn’t have sympathy. It’s nice having a website like ROK to remind me that not everyone out there is an idiot.
I have posted this article on her behalf, I thought this woman understood what it’s like to be poor, being a poor working-class man myself; I thought this woman understood, because she lived through it. Thank goodness I didn’t give her any money, but now I will question someone who writes about being poor if they actually lived in poverty, this woman is a swindler; nothing more.
Maybe you should write about your experiences. I never considered myself poor, because my parents would always have offered me food and a bed if I needed it, but I remember how nerve-wracking it was to drive a crap-can car that was always on the verge of breaking down, and how dangerous it was when I had to put the car in neutral and push/steer the damned thing into a gas station after it stalled in the middle of a busy intersection.

It never ceases to amaze me how when a woman asks for money lots and lots of men automatically puts their hands in the pockets and give her money. Think pretty girls asking for money in any busy shopping mall…right?
And yet when a man asks for money, no matter WHAT he has done, no matter HOW good a man he is, the VAST MAJORITY of men will actually hate on him. They will say things like “get a real job” or “men should pay for themselves”.
I am a good example of this. Despite being willing to put in 4,000+ hours of unpaid labour to the benefit of other men. Despite being the only man to video record a family court matter and put it on YT to PROVE the criminality of the courts. Despite being willing to publicly take on three different national guvmints for the benefit of other men.
When I asked so much as to be paid for a book (since asking for donations never works for men, just ask Earl Silverman) how do men react? They call me a liar, that is a popular one. “You didn’t do what you said you did.” They tell me I should “get a real job” like being a burger flipper is a more noble cause than saving the lives of the tens of thousands of men who kill themselves in the divorce courts each year.
Really. The list of insults I have been subjected to for doing no more than offering a book for sale so that I can contribute that to food and rent while I am being persecuted is quite endless.
Men would do very well to ask themselves why is it that men will throw money at the least deserving of women while they will throw insults at the most deserving of men. I think that is much more worthy of discussion than simply pointing out more woman is a liar. I mean, really, where is the “news” value in that?

The problem is that the people she scammed will likely never find out. If they did, there’s a slight chance they might get angry and rethink their position on The War On Poverty [“We declared a War On Poverty….and Poverty won.”]
Huffington Post was using this woman’s fake sob story to champion no cuts to the Food Stamp program, and I believe they achieved their goal. Millions read the fake story of woe via Huffington Post, The Guardian, Gawker, The Nation, etc. How many of those people will read this expose?
Utah….rich mormon parents? The church is big on taking care of people you can hear about them paying someones mortgage while the person gets back on their feet.
Within the first 24 hours this was posted at HuffPo Tirado clarified in the comments section that she was not writing about herself per se but a conglomerate of poor people she had observed over the years. If people sent donations to her after that, they are fools and have only themselves to blame. However, as this is the “season of giving” there’s no harm done. Hopefully Tirado herself will “give back to the community”, and keep it movin’ by “gifting it forward” in the future.

I actually knew about that! Ms Tirado asked her fellow feminists if it was okay for her to have a lesbian affair. No points for guessing whether she received “You go, grrl!” encouragement from the Sisterhood. That was left out because the piece was too long already.
From what I could gather from Tirado’s postings, it appears that the husband’s mother dumped his father because she felt bored. The poor schmuck joined the service and wound up marrying a carbon copy of his selfish mother.
There is no group of men who need the red pill more than our soldiers. They are men upholding traditional values in a society that will only punish them for doing what used to be “The Right Thing”.
