China is going through a cultural crisis due to a huge generation gap between parents who lived in rural communes and their children who crave smartphones and Western values. At the same time, Chinese culture still expects children to take of the parents, and are constantly reminded of their “duty” through a variety of shaming tactics. Chinese parents actually push children into buying apartments they can barely afford to guarantee they’ll have a place to stay when they get old, as this article in Aeon Magazine describes.
‘I have a friend the same age as me,’ Luo the young professional said, ‘whose parents just paid the down-payment on her apartment. But her mom has been staying with her since November, and she wants to stay on. It’s a one-bedroom flat.’ Buying their children apartments isn’t just a simple investment for parents, but a guarantee, at least in their minds, of an old age spent in their children’s house.
With this backdrop, the Chinese approach to dating appears to be transactional, based mostly on resources instead of love.
The media often deplore the commercialised nature of young love, exemplified in 2010 by Ma Nuo, a contestant on a dating show; when asked by an unemployed contender if she would ride with him on his bike, she replied: ‘I’d rather cry in a BMW than laugh on a bicycle.’ It’s true that the bling-laden snapshots of triumphant gold-diggers on dating sites and boastful blogs are deeply off-putting. But the criteria that parents give matchmakers, or advertise on placards that some of them carry around parks at the weekend while looking for suitable spouses for their unmarried offspring, are just as centered around salary, car and apartment.

I think many are aware of the cultural trend of westernization and modernity.
The ending question was whether or not this trend would lead to a ‘poosy paradise’ in 5 or more years.
But my experience in Japan and S. Korea is that this poosy paradise is already happening, and one only needs to ask any marine or sailor who served in any regional conflict there, or later who were stationed at any number of bases.

I’m not sure how far back a commenter pseudo-named Gorbachev said this. I think it was about two years ago on Roissy’s(Heartiste’s) http://www.heartistesite.wordpress.com/ as well as Ferdinand Bardamu’s site. I couldn’t find his comments if a I desperately tried to save my soul. I haven’t seen nor heard from him in a while. I disagreed with him on Bardamu’s site, and he never wanted to blog with me which is fine with me. I don’t personally know him. However, I did agree with him about his assessment of Seoul, South Korea because I lived there shortly before him and believed him when he wrote about Shanghai, China. I’ll try to remember, summarize and be as truthful as possible in a sense of being just to him. He stated that the Koreans especially in Seoul were by far more discrete than Westerners, but there was pretty just as much fornication and adultery going on. He said the Chinese especially in Shanghai were having just as much and more fornication and adultery than Koreans but one had to be at least as discrete as the Koreans. He stated that it was harder for a foreigner to have any kind of a relationship with a Korean woman than a Chinese woman. He stated that there are a lower percentage of Chinese men and Korean men who have GAME than Western men, but that these Chinese and Korean men who had GAME were getting more sex and more partners than anyone else including the foreigners and that initially he found the amount of sex and partners these men got to be amazing as they were cleaning up with the women more than any other men in the world he saw. I think the ratio problem in China is that people would normally abort female fetuses during pregnancy. This had to do with with a combination of the one child policy and the expectation that the labors of the male child will aid the parents, whereas only surplus resources can go into a female child since she will be married off and her family none the richer for it.
And in the rural areas they are allowed to have more than one child because they need more hands on the farm. The reason these things are happening in China is the same as anywhere else.
Not getting married used to be consider odd, even sinful. It was practically your duty to create offspring, continue the bloodline, marry into a wealthy family etc. But like all developed countries, extra money means people shun tradition for their own self interests. If other developed Asian nations are any example, however, China’s society will likely always remain relatively conservative compared to the West, and not descend entirely into that failed model.
My take: the demographics are not in men’s favor. The biggest looming problem for men exploring China & Korea is the demographic problem. There is now a huge and growing surplus of men there. Due to a cultural preference for male children, the male/female ratios are now very big, and getting bigger. My experience has been that Chinese women are far far less materialistic than Americans. And its pretty difficult for women there to get married. Not being a primarily churchian society, they are pretty far along with the marriage strike now.

The fact is that men there are under a lot less pressure to marry and it shows. As the U.S.’s culture becomes exported at faster and faster rates, it is very important that we take a look at what that culture is exactly that we are exporting. I’ve lived abroad for 3 years, and one thing I can tell for certain is that we are exporting our culture at an extremely high rate. This means…*yay*- feminism and fat acceptance along with hollywood movies.
I think getting rich and going western are not the same thing. Hong Kong went western and rich, whereas Korea and Japan are not very western at all in my opinion. I see little westernization going on here in China as well.
I have lived in Japan for 5 years and the last 6 months I have been in Guangzhou China. First thing I want to say, this Conservative traditional stuff is all BS. Chinese fool around more than westerners.
I don t find the girls throwing themselves at me here, and I don t think its a good place to roll in and expect to get laid. Most socializing is done in tight groups and clubs are designed for people to mingle with their friends. However, if you spend an extended amount of time learn the lay of the land it is very very easy to meet girls here. Easier than Japan or Canada.
Another bonus is there are tons of hot eastern European models who are here and a shortage of acceptable men for them (white guys date Chinese and they don t want to date Chinese guys) so they are friendly.
I am coming off a particularly stellar weekend with many beautiful women. But I still cannot really recommend this place for a traveling love tourist. Living here is great in the lady department (and money too) but quality of life in other faucets lacks (no sun due to horrible pollution).
Oh one more thing I like. Chinese dudes aren t cockblocks. Japanese and particularly Korean men I find horrible. I really hate them, they treat you like an invader and sadly the girls follow their lead. I personally think a lot of this has to do with the higher status of women in China than in Japan or Korea. Women think for themselves, and honestly that works out better for the foreigner.
