How Jerry Seinfeld’s Position On Political Correctness Is Critical For Comedy’s Future

Jerry Seinfeld has been active and successful in comedy on both stage and television for over 30 years now. I’m sure those of you who follow social media have seen his recent interview about his position on stand-up comedy, which is critical for the future of free speech and comedy for several reasons.

First, he has had a relevant and strong position in an industry he helped to bring into the mainstream through the 80s with his stand-up and TV role, as well as with Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. It is important to note that he hasn’t just followed suit in societal trends—he finds something funny and goes with it, and that is all that matters.

Jerry does not care. In 2014 when asked about the lack of “diversity in comedy” he responded with:

“Who cares? … You’re funny, I’m interested. You’re not funny, I’m not.” 

For anyone who is working their way through the industry, those were probably heartening words. More recently, the toxic elements are complaining about what he said this month:

“Don’t go near colleges, they’re so PC.’ I have no interest in gender or race or anything like that,” Seinfeld said. “But everyone else is kind of, with their calculating—is this the exact right mix? I think that’s—to me it’s anti-comedy. It’s more about PC-nonsense.”

It’s the same refrain of past comedians when social justice began to bleed into everything in entertainment. The old Opie and Anthony Show (and now both separately), and the late and great Patrice O’Neal were outspoken proponents of free speech in comedy.

Patrice’s stance on comedy and fake outrage at non-PC joke material’s most well known incident probably stems from his 2007 appearance on Fox News when he called out a shill (and subsequently was never invited to Fox News again).

The difference today is we have one of the most famous comedians of all time stating as such, with no sugar coating. When #1 says you are wrong, have been wrong, and what you’re doing is also destructive to the craft—you’re done. In stand-up comedy especially, which is truly an American form of art, you are down and out for good.

Jerry has FU money and he is still one of the most influential comedians of his generation, if not the most influential according to many people in the industry. He does not care about your feelings, and comedy shouldn’t either. Comedy will let comedy decide what is funny or not. It is a self-critiquing process.

The new generation of PC

I am far removed from my undergraduate days, but from what I have seen today, I would not survive. Stifling conversation and debate because it hurts someone’s feelings, or the shocking non-satirical suggestion that instead of clapping people ‘wave jazz hands’ to prevent triggering people?

I also remember that when I was in school, big name people would stop by and tour our auditoriums regularly. We had greats such as Lewis Black and George Carlin come through, and it’s a sad state that it’s such a hostile environment that Jerry Seinfeld—or anyone of his caliber—won’t tour colleges. When you make an echo chamber you end up with the terrible Western women colleges have been pumping out for a while now, and the emasculated beta males that follow them.

Jerry’s remark to the matter is stark naked truth, something public discourse needs these days, and it is important that he said it.  Seinfeld’s criticism may mark the beginning of people getting up and walking away from the bullshit and echo chamber of PC nothingness. This is vital, because there is a real fear these days among comedians that what they say will be used against them to destroy them because it hurt some obscure demographic or someone’s idiotic sensibility.

Fear stifles creativity, but maybe with Jerry’s comment it’s time to stop being afraid, and just ignore this incredibly small, yet shrill and blustering minority. Maybe if we begin to say it in other fields, people will stop being afraid and we can have an honest discourse about the issues of today again—instead of just categorizing the 50 different ways you can offend someone pretending to be a victim.

    1. Comedy will not die even if SJW’s act like petulant children and demand that it be eradicated from the soulless, humorless equalist utopia they want to create. In fact, SJW’s themselves are laughing stocks that are frequently ridiculed by people who can recognize useful idiots when they see them. What these imbeciles don’t realize is that suppressing and regulating ideas or concepts simply leads to them proliferating and propagating faster. Also, Seinfeld was well aware of this bullshit way back in the day and had no qualms about mocking it.

  3. It would be interesting to see if other comedians follow suit in calling out the PC garbage, since comedy (especially stand-up) has been historically and notoriously blunt and honest regardless of the “feels.”
    Maybe Stephen Lynch can write a song about it. And should PC go the way of the dodo, SNL could even make a comeback or we could see the return of MADtv.

        19. A good friend of mine, after a rough breakup, told me to just wait, once you hit 30 (I was almost there) things get easy and women start throwing themselves at you. It came true pretty soon after my birthday, and has remained so for a while.     1. I think that’s a mistaken perception. The old conservatives were defending (for the most part) standards of conduct and restraint that had historical kept societies from degenerating into what we have now. This was Morality A, which was at least in the West, broadly Christian in tone and content. What the Left now promotes, is in effect Morality B, absolute freedom and equality, based in the values of the Enlightenment. The equality bit is straight forward enough, but how you say, does restricting speech lead to greater freedom?
      Well, when this transition started 50+ years ago, the argument wasn’t made “Morality A is bad, Morality B is better.” That would never have worked. No, instead it was simply said, “if it feels good, do it,” “do your own thing,” “old standards of the past are passe, and out of date,” “we should be free of oppressive standards of morality,” etc, etc. What was being offered was tolerance; nothing’s better or worse than anything else, just do as you will and life will just go on.
      The problem with this is that “tolerance” isn’t and can never be an absolute moral value, without in practice it becoming just as restrictive as any other moral standard. Not every issue in life is of such menial importance as choosing what toppings go on your pizza, where one choice is as good as another, and “Vive les differences!” In issues of that kind, we can have tolerance for different choices. But on issues which draw into question what it means to be human, which are fundamentally moral in nature, tolerance is an illusion. Societies must choose where they stand. Either they are in favor or it, or against it. All societies have a generally accepted standard of morality at any given point in time.
      For instance, whereas 50 years ago homosexuality was not just culturally/socially shunned, but religiously condemned, and technically illegal, with the transition to a more heterosexually “free” society which began to arise in the Sixties, society couldn’t maintain that sort of restrictive treatment of homosexuality any longer. This was so because to justify promiscuous heterosexuality, “free love” was deemed natural and healthy, and any restrictions upon it were deemed not just unnecessary, but actively oppressive because they limited natural human expression. So if promiscuity among heterosexuals was natural, and “love” was natural and good, why would a different expression of human sexuality and “love” be treated any differently? Was not homosexuality love as well? As natural as well? If it were, then speaking against it and treating people differently because of it, was no different than speaking against and treating people differently because of race, as it too was just a natural part of being human. Whatever was deemed natural then, was a positive good, and any restriction upon it, was oppressive and itself harmful, if not entirely based on irrationality.
      So “tolerance” of a behavior of this kind, necessarily transitions into forced acceptance of it, because the mere act of tolerance bestows a frame of natural expression upon the behavior. Because for it to be tolerated in the first, it must first be deemed natural, healthy and not harmful to society. This in turn, leads to a forced acceptance, because in the Left’s conception of the human nature, what is natural, is right. The one leads to the other. Restrictions on what is natural, are themselves unnatural and thereby, oppressive.
      Either homosexuality corrosive to the health of a society, or it’s not. If it’s not, then it’s perfectly fine, and if it’s perfectly fine, then people who continue to treat it as corrosive are being irrationally hateful, and they themselves should be opposed by any ‘moral” person in society. Which is exactly the way in which SJWs approach the issue. It’s fundamentally a moral issue for them. Homosexuality is a healthy, natural expression of human sexuality, which itself is perfectly natural, and should be allowed without limitation. Anyone who opposes it then, must do so for hateful, irrational reasons, and should be condemned and driven from public life in the interests of a moral society.
      Tolerance is an obtuse and disingenuous value. Passive tolerance (I don’t like it, but I won’t restrict it) in time will necessitate active acceptance on issues which define what it means to be human and to be free. To be fully “free” is to live in a world without restriction on living as a natural human would live. To restrict “hateful” intolerance, is to increase the feeling of freedom one has in living as a natural human being, unhindered by societal restrictions of all kinds.
      People like Seinfeld were a part of a generation that helped to trash Morality A, in the interests of short-sighted selfishness. They weren’t consciously trying to rework the moral framework of society, they just wanted to fuck like rabbits and tell crass humor without being judged for it. To justify their self-indulgence in private life and “freedom” from good taste in public life, they adopted the “if it feels good, do it” mentality of tolerance. What they didn’t count on, was where this would eventually lead. Which is to a society that makes “tolerance” of all behaviors a moral issue in and of itself. In this world, continuing to point out differences which are now thought of as backwards, irrational, and entirely make-believe, only serve to perpetuate feelings of judgment against homosexuals. This increases their sense of unequal treatment and “otherness” which SJWs call “micro-aggressions.” If you’re a moral person who opposes this kind of “oppression” then condemning someone like Seinfeld who continues to perpetuate it, knowingly or not, is the moral thing to do.

You’re referring to their definition of tolerance, which like ‘diversity’, the rainbow as a gay symbol, ‘equality’.. these words or symbols are benign or even uplifting/righteous, so people find it difficult to dispute them, though what they’re actually tagged to might be very morally questionable. It’s a classic communist technique: good is bad, and bad is good.
        Tolerance at a societal and political level is also different to tolerance at an individual level. Tolerance is the ability to take pain, for the greater good. So, for example, a decent man will tolerate/endure the mental pain of his envy for another man’s wife, because he knows acting upon his lust will have consequences for the children of that family, as well as for the local community. Tolerance is bearing the pain of life rather than leaning on intoxicants to catch a buzz, which destabilises people, predisposing them to anger, etc, etc. Tolerance is actually self-control, and is a self-imposed virtue.
        As you mentioned, societies dictate policy in the interest of fairness, ‘inclusiveness’, etc, but the laws become restrictive when everyone is ‘owed’ a seat at the table. In the past, societies had demarcations of what would be tolerated from their citizens. These were imposed for the greater good, as people testing the limits of what’s acceptable will destabilise a society. People look to the ruling powers/policies for guidance, and when anything goes, there’s very little need to practice self-control. A tolerant person is a good citizen, but a tolerant society isn’t a good thing, because then that citizen will be expected to tolerate beyond what is reasonable for a human being (for example being required by law to raise another man’s child, watch violent thugs make his community unsafe, etc, etc).

          The Torah consists of five books and it’s considered to be the holiest book for the Jews.

          Talmud is a philosophic interpretation of the Mishna which is the written version of the Oral Torah which according to a tradition was given to Moses along with the regular Torah in the Sinai mountain. Thus, they can’t deny either of them.

  12. I agree with Jerry, you should be free to deliver your material without the so called “P.C.” Police. However I think there is the issue of the joke being delivered with “taste,” and timing and “awareness.” For example making a joke of September 11th that is tasteless right after it happened I think most would agree is not wise, and will not result in laughs. You can make a joke about Religion, Feminism, Politics, Race, Poverty, but the delivery is the key. Also if you deliver a joke and it makes people THINK as well as laugh it is comedy gold! It is also about your audience and who makes up your audience which can determine how “funny” your joke is. If you can deliver a funny joke to a wide audience then you are especially skilled.
    Also a key and very important factor is the persons own Background and Perspective who is consuming the comedian’s joke. People who are conservative and or Caucasian (among others) for example dislike comedian Nazeem Hussein, a South Asian-Muslim comedian in Australia. He mentions the fact that white people don’t like Blacks telling jokes about whites and they feel that the white comedian can’t do the same…an argument I see posed on this site for example…then he breaks down why that is in a funny way. However while I may find it funny some others do not find it funny as evidenced by comments online for example. So those people in reality were also “triggered.” Or for example I myself do not like conservative comedian Dennis Miller and I do not find him “funny.” However many conservatives do find him “funny.” Another perspective is that I find John Stewart funny but many conservatives may NOT find him “funny.” This means that it’s not only the people who are supposedly among the P.C. crowd who get angered, but it can easily be people who are thought of as being outside the “P.C.” crowd who get angered/triggered as well!
    But also very important and very skilled comedians can deliver a joke that does NOT agree with your world view/perspective and background but you can STILL find it funny. For example Tosh.0 makes very Non- P.C. jokes that will offend people of different races and nationalities among other Socio-economical backgrounds, but in my OPINION he delivers them in a way where the offense is dampened. Personally for me the mitigating factor is he jokes about everyone equally. Sometimes he can annoy people I admit that, but that is how I generally feel. Others may disagree but this is just my opinion.
    In conclusion, funny is not absolute it is relative. Funny is what YOU find “funny.” Personally its easy for me to find Lewis Black, Chris Rock, George Carlin, Paul Mooney funny because they share the general perspectives I have. But other comedians from other perspectives I might find “funny” depending on their delivery and style. Laughter serves a great purpose, relieving stress, a form of expression, and a unification tool across all people no matter race, class, or perspective (if done right!).
    As for Jerry Seinfeld…. he is a great businessman and makes great points, but I never found his stand-up or his show Seinfeld “funny.” But it’s all a matter of what you find “funny” anyway.

    Comedy Central was my favorite channel by far. Shows that ended that year include Tough Crowd with colin Quinn, The Man Show, Chappelle Show, Insomniac with Dave Attell among others- what have they put out since then? It sucks.
    All of these shows would be pulled off the air within a matter of weeks now- even Chappelle.

    Already the daughter doesn’t have any use for the modern man. I had a conversation with some girls I went out with tonight, and they made similar statements. Men can’t do much for them, and they see marriage as a net negative. Setting aside the amount of money and resources they can extract from men, they have a point. It’s a toxic environment for social relations today in the west.

    It’s already starting. Most guys know feminism and PC-ism is bullshit, but they go along with it either to appease their female overlords or to put on a front like they’re actually good people. But in the past year I’ve been surprised to see relatively average guys posting things from Manosphere sites on Facebook. Many of them aren’t your typical libertarian or overly political types, either, they’re just logical thinkers who see through the bullshit.
    I’ve also never met a SJW in real life. All their power comes from their keyboards, and in real life they’ll be too afraid to confront you. That’s why the “problem” of manspreading, which could easily be stopped by the offended person asking the spreader to close their legs, is instead dealt with by having the “offender’s” photo posted online or having some passive-aggressive think piece written about the issue after the fact.

  43. I know a fellow who is very un-PC and makes rape,pedo, and murder jokes, and super PC SJWs swoon over him and even join in the fun. But if a non-charismatic comedian at amateur night makes a light-hearted fat joke or a joke about womens’ double standards, the same women get butt-hurt about misogynistic patriarchy sexualizing women. Meanwhile, the charismatic un-PC fellow gets laughs from the same SJWs when he jokes about babies getting raped and other gruesome stuff.
