How To Survive During An Urban Apocalypse

When doing survival “research” today you more or less find stuff that fall into two main approaches:

  • Bugging out: basically leaving where you live, either to move to forests/Mother Nature (buschcraft) or a second location that you would have prepared in advance
  • Bugging in: basically staying where you are and preparing right now at your current location.

If like me, based upon the analysis of your own situation you intuitively root for the second option by default, (i.e. bugging in), then this article is definitely for you.

1. Bugging in versus bugging out

First of all, whatever the reason why a survival situation arises (earthquake, serious riots, civil war), staying where you live eliminates a lot of uncertainty. Indeed, you know what your surroundings are (potential danger areas, but resources as well) and what you have at your disposal. You can right now prepare a full set of supplies that you know that you will have readily available if needed on D-Day. Your storage capacity will be no match with a bugging out bag you would rely on to reach a potential location you possibly would never reach (and guess what, chances are you will end exactly as a refugee).

If you think about leaving to the forest, just try to figure out what could happen. You will have basically on one side fierce competition with other humans vs. scare resources

Do you think your potential food (animals) would just wait and do nothing in case of massive human arrival? They will adapt, hide and leave.

Will it be easy to defend yourself in the woods (basically open locations)? Skill-wise, believe me, spending a week-end of bushcraft is one thing. Living in full autonomy in a forest is accessible to only a few.

Do you have a family? Points above get worse! Not the mention the psychological benefit of staying in a familiar environment for them.

2. What you need

What you really need falls into three categories…

Water and Food

Just one word: STORAGE. For food, store what you like. In a survival situation, you have to avoid quick-burning sugar and focus on cereals (corn) and legumes (beans). Seeds are a great alternative as well. You would need a small amount of water to have germinated ones and you would get all the nutrients you need, not to mention the storage requirement which is quite low.

For water, store as much as you can (even more important than food). Try if you can non-plastic recipients as after a while plastic would blend with water and give to it an awful taste (though better than no water at all). Due to the needs we have, you would need to get creative to store a decent quantity.

Hygiene and Health

Just double or triple what you have today when it comes to soap, toothpaste (some sorts of soap could be used as toothpaste, like “Savon de Marseille”), plastic bags, duct tape, and hydro-alcoholic solution. For toilets, dry ones are the solutions, basically large plastic/trash bags and sawdust will do the job.

Prepare a list of common drugs for diarrhea, pain, fever, gastric diseases and so on. For antibiotics, be careful: you can try large-spectrum ones but a misusage of can lead to a situation worse than before the treatment. Consider alternatives like colloidal silver or magnesium chloride. Finally, go and get some first aid training.

Weapons

Learn how to properly use your weapon of choice, and I mean not only firing but getting sight alignment theory and practice, quick target acquisition, shooting a moving target, plus basic operations (reloading, incident management, cleaning). Get ammunition in advance. Consider the use of a suppressor as well (inside use, you ears will thank you for that). On top of this, attracting people through the noise is the least thing you would want to do.

3. Make your urban survival plan

Take some time right now to establish a plan that would go beyond just getting some supplies which are, obviously, not going to last forever.

First, establish a physical security plan for the location you live in. Do you live in a flat at an elevated floor? That’s easier to defend if lifts are not working but riskier in terms of exposure to criminal fire. Try to identify potential allies in your immediate surroundings/neighborhoods—you would need someone to watch your back or establish some surveillance routines

Second, establish a refuel plan for both food/water.

For water, one of the only viable options would be rain collection (if in dry climate, consider condensation even if return rate would be low). Just build some kind of water collection system on your balcony or roof. Boil the water after gathering. Some people would say that this pure water could be bad health-wise as it contains no minerals, so using salt or putting some rocks at the bottom of your recipient could help.

For food, just prepare basically a plan around traps for birds/rats, and so on. Learn some gardening skills (and scout potential location to grow food).

Drugs are not found “as is” so you will need things of value to exchange. Think about some easily storable items that could be exchanged at the right time (one of my personal favorite would be lighters). At the beginning of a survival situation, identify where you could find the different kinds of supplies (pharmacies for drugs, restaurants for knives or cooking materials, and so on).

In case of last resort, if your flat is burning or you are forced by military to leave your house, try to move to another part of the city rather than going to the woods or to an hypothetical location that you would think of in advance with no guarantee of reaching it.

Conclusion

Urban survival comes as a combo of supplies/materials, knowledge, and most importantly, having a plan and sticking to it. Use this article as a guide and adapt wherever you deem it necessary depending on your personal situation or beliefs. Use modeled scenarios to adapt your plan based on your observations and never stop to test and learn.

    I grew up in exurb, forest, mountain and maritime environments, but make my weekday living in the city, where the money and intellectual/creative challenges are intense. It’s a good situation but it’s not my instinctual home. Given the high-density awkwardness of such a habitation, at first I dreaded a bug-out scenario before I spent a year thoroughly preparing for it. That was about 2 years ago; I just finished my annual checklist and supply re-up/replacement (expired food) cycle and see a medium-high level of readiness in my kit, skills, and mental preparedness, with room for improvement. My head is ready; I am also prepared to die and hopefully die well by living with a sense of Thanatos, and that is a big obstacle for lots of people (and up until about age 34, it was for me too). The bug-out is a lot less scary if you embrace the chaos and acknowledge the impermanence of all things. Supply-wise I could do better but don’t have the space. Sometimes I’ll actually go beyond theorizing and almost fantasize, rhapsodize about the simplicity of stark survival versus the ultra-modern grid we sometimes feel as overburden. Story for another time…

    Everything ready to go, or ready to stay; bug-in, bug-out, get to liking both ideas– bug short-range, bug medium-range, and bug x-country to a special sustainable property way off the grid (unknown to others but where far-flung family can try to reconnoiter after the shit hits the fan).
    —
    Vehicle bug-out kit also ready. Extra fuel, extras for repairs. If I can’t use the vehicle (EMP short-circuit; roads ruined, damaged or gridlocked; militia barricade, gang cordon, or other barrier, etc.), then switch to bicycle bug out (front/rear pannier, backpack, touring bike). If bike fails, then walk out with guns and larger (50-pound) internal frame pack and give myself a 30-mile radius. My workplace location can also sustain a semi-private bugout for weeks if need be, and it’s within range.

    Three compass points to choose from: N, S and E (to the west is ocean). Bug-out locations picked in each direction, in case of wind-driven radiation, contamination, or contagion. The one in the east is the furthest, but leads to a legitimate off-grid, self-sustainable location that others will not easily find. I have tested it repeatedly and will reconnoiter with trusted family or closest friends/collaborators there. It will sustain 20-30 people, and is a visually idyllic/scenic place to be in 3 seasons, but winters will suck.

    For bug-IN: 2+ weeks worth of provisions in the apartment, plans to scavenge, forage and hunt as needed. My flat is more secure than most, and far enough away from the city core and downtown that there’s some space to claim. Downtown is a shithole, ot be avoided at all costs during even a mild collapse. Fishing gear (both regular and backpack/trail-sized kits). Trapping small game, definitely part of the larger bugout kit because parks and considerable open space are nearby. The core kit is a well-equipped but heavy bugout backpack — can self-sustain on the run for 4-5 days, alone. I also have the capability to bring one other person and take care of them for 1-2 days at least.

    Grew up with a bunch of guns (most boys/men hunt in the family; archery too) but haven’t had one on my own premises since HS. That’s the last part of the kit that must be completed soon. Guns…gotta have a couple guns; AR and a pistol, travel light. Right now it’s just machete and a range of other stabbing weapons, sprays, tasers, sub-lethal hand-held shit, plus my own skills…none of which will win against a gun. Time to buy guns.

I’ll try to dominate by being indispensable in any crew; as if to say, even if your injured or old they want you around for some reason… be that guy. In a bugout I want to live or die honorably, in the crisis, in the shit, and know how to collaborate and share the power. Because the anarchic kind might shoot you for your granola bar and utility belt if you don’t play nice sometimes.

      1. Bugging out via boat down a navigable river is one thing. Living on a boat, absent a larger one like a yacht is another. It is too easy to get stranded and the weight for resources necessary to survive 30+ days is just too much for even most mid-size recreational boats.
        At least here in the US boats are designed to be taken out for a day then placed back in dock. Not to house humans (absent industrial boats).
        I wouldn’t count on bug out on boat for anything more then a backup plan for getting out of your urban environment or crossing some large lake or other body of water it would take days to go around.

    Ostensibly the real rich like “Ocean views” but in terms of subconscious human strategic instinct they are nearest other places to run to.
    Again, it is the beleaguered Anglo-Saxon Yeoman in the Flyover and not the Jew on Wall Street or the Asian in Silicon Valley who will be “stuck” if urban civilization collapses.
    In point of fact, with the addition of welfare, civilization has already collapsed in places like Detroit. They have simply collapsed economically and are ghost towns or internal third worlds.
    In terms of dispersion, blacks and Anglo-Saxons from Old Colonial stock with dead roots in the old world and Mestizos are kind of firmly “stuck” in the US.
    The rest-Jews, Asians, Indians, ethnic whites who are the children or grandchildren of recent immigrants can simply “restart” elsewhere.
    The internal of the US is a primary economic producer so the city hordes will attempt to raid it like blacks raided South African farms.

    The density of solutes in water after boiling is higher, not lower, because some water vapour (steam) leaves, while the solutes stay put.
    You are thinking of distillation, where you boil the water and collect the steam, condensing it back into pure water, leaving the solutes behind in the container where you did the boiling.

I would guess the author is talking about a time of major social breakdown, be that war, society breakdown, zombie apocalypse, invaders from Mars etc etc etc. In such a time money wont matter at all (unless your rfid can still exchange bitcoin). My point is that cities are easy to close off, unless you happen to be out of the city at the time of a major crisis, you’ll be buggered. Why do you think there is a glibal push to get people into the cities? I’ve seen it in every country Ive visited. I’ve taken part in exercises to clise off (small) cities going back to the cold war. Something big is coming and we are all being led to it like sheep to slaughter. Im not a conspiracy nut, I can’t tell you what it is, but based on my experience it’s been planned for a long time, the mission creep is obvious if you care to look at it closely. This website wouldn’t exsist if all of us didn’t realise something very wrong is going on. Take my advice, make no plan other than an exit strategy from the cities.

  21. Depending on the size and mobility of your group, in the case of urban collapse, GET OUT. You really only have 24-48 hours from incident zero to do so. Either the city is going to devolve into chaos or the military is going to get up checkpoints that keep you from making an exit.
    You should have a plan to get out around hour eight after incident zero, ideally at night. Keep in mind your average human party, walking, can cover about 25 miles a day without exhausting themselves. Within 24 hours that is going to get you to the exurbs most likely. By then people will have abandoned their homes to flee further into the country and most business will be unoccupied.
    Your best bet is to find a business park which houses mostly larger corporate businesses. No one is going to have enough loyalty to try to defend such an office place and few will think of taking their families. Most will have some food and a lot of bottled water for the water cooler. Hold up there for 12-24 hours while you can gather information and other supplies. Rest is also going to be a big thing. You might have to move quickly after this stage.
    If SHTF then plot the most reasonable course out. Old railroad tracks are a good starting place. You will have clear sight lines and the route should keep you away from clogged roads and military checkpoints. Cutting through national/state parks is also a good way to go. Most have well maintained paths and are also far from interstates and larger towns.
    Your ultimate destination is going to depend on your party size and incident type. Most likely you are going to want a smaller town that is within a 3-5 day journey (keeping in mind unless you need to move at a grueling pace your maximum range per day should be about 25 miles).
    A lot of people are tempted to get our the urban area then shelter in place waiting for things to blow over. First, at this stage, it probably isn’t simply going to blow over and order will be restored. Second, your resources are going to dwindle quicker then you can imagine, even if you are rationing. Third, you are making yourself a target for an ambush or raid by a group that wants your stuff. Your footprint is going to start to become noticeable by anyone watching the area.
    Same if you stay on the road and move about. You are going to get tired. There will be little to nothing to forage in most areas. You might get lost. And if you run into another group chances are you will have a confrontation.
    Smaller towns by day 6 or 7 are going to have defenses and other systems set up or being developed. You are going to have to talk your way in unless you know people who can vouch for you. That might involve giving up some resources, but it is better then the alternative. Offer to help in anyway you can – that means doctors, past law enforcement, military, vets, nurses, construction, and anyone else with practical skills should speak up.
    Whatever you do – do NOT get into gun fights. They are a net loser even if you win. First you are probably only carrying enough ammo for one or two at the most. Second if order is restored there might be repercussions in terms of criminal charges in the unlikely chance it can be proven you shot someone else and they died. If you have to take a prisoner bind them securely and leave them be. It is too much liability to take them with you and that prisoner is going to slow you down. Just hope that another group finds them before a predator does.
    I’m not a fan of bike bug-outs because it makes you a target. People are going to figure out quickly once the roads jam up and become impassable bikes are a valuable mode of transportation. It also inhibits your stealth and ability to form formations to secure good fields of fire. Plan on moving slowly, methodically, and on foot. If you find an abandoned car on a back road (be careful could be a trap), do your security checks, then just ride the thing until you hit your first obstruction. Even if you go 8-10 miles that is a few hours of walking, plus most cars will have some resources contained in them. Watch out for mysterious vehicles though seemly blocking a road ahead. This also could be a trap. Leave the car at least half a mile away and proceed with caution. Never assume anything is just as it appears.
    If by day 14-21 the federal government has not restored order, there is little chance it is coming back any time soon. Hopefully you have landed in a friendly community and this is when time for large term planning comes into play. You are going to need crops, hunting parties, water management, self-defense training, and planning for seasonal weather changes for your climate. It will be rough.
    Just keep in mind that most humans will be shocked by these conditions. Even seasoned veterans of past wars. Yeah sure they were in the field but would eventually come back to what were cities. If they were hurt a medi-vac would should up in minutes (with the exception of very rare special operations). There is going to be a lot of suicide and mental health issues. Diseases that have been relegated to the history books will come out of nature again. It will not be a “fun” time to be alive. But if you have the will to live then you can make it happen.

      All BS, me an my sniper rifle can take anything you have from you and your group.
      You can’t hide from a good hunter with a rifle, I’ll pick you off one at a time, but maybe not your attractive young women.

      1. As a sniper first you have to have a good look out position. Second you need to see they are coming. Third you need not to be in close quarters. Also it only takes a few shots and a good scope to locate a sniper and to knock him out of a tree. A good friend of mine who was a sniper for the Army would always say “you get one shot then you go full auto”. Assuming you don’t have a rig with highly regulated, expensive gear (or outright banned in many states) I doubt this even applies.

    2. @Jeff that wouldn’t work, the check points would be the easiest option. The only way to successfully get out out, is if every man, woman and child scattered at the same time to all points. Even then the death rate would be immense. The only way out would be blind luck to be out of a city before it went down. Mind, even if you were in the bush your fate might not be any better. Im sure they’ll be rolling out their stealth drones soon enough, night vision, heat seeking, silent running, mass produced. Fuck we live in interesting times.

  22. For food…legumes and cereals? Nah to hell with all that. Store up fats. Butter, oils, and canned meats. You don’t need to cook or cool any of these and their thermogenic value is far greater than any legumes or cereal. You will also never feel hungry.

  23. You won’t survive in the city. Everything that you can say about the countryside e.g. gangs of people coming to take your stuff, is more true in a city. Also, most people will stay where they are thinking that the government will save them.

  24. You can scrounge and horde all the supplies you want, but if you don’t have a Platoon sized crew of able-bodied and armed friends, you’re just collecting supplies for the guys that do. When Society falls apart, the Tribe will keep you alive.

    However, as others have mentioned people like Selco recommend against staying in an urban environment when SHTF. But there may not be any other choice.
    Most important thing for readers here is to know that at some point soon we’re going to experience hard times the likes few of us have ever seen, and being mentally prepared for a miserable life is just as important as stockpiling your basic preps.

      Welfare is going to drop down to a few cans of Alpo in the future and instead of being robbed for crack cocaine you will be robbed for KFC buckets.
      More cities are going to look like Detroit. The Federal government might exert national control but will tell state gov they do not care at all about saving cities.
      More people’s property will be worthless after a lifetime paying a mortgage, like my grandmothers house in Detroit.
      Orphans will be everywhere because of recreational fucking and they will be wild and feral.
      If you have more than 2 kids you will be fucked. Anybody who has kids at all with no skill or trade will be fucked.
      White: Minority populations will be totally out of skew because these people will have 5 kids no matter what while whites will not. Like Brazil we will have a white/Jewish elite and a mass of poor blacks and Mulattos.
      If welfare fails there will be armed raids on farms and the rural whites will become more militant and shoot people for stealing fruit to eat. Welfare IS important.
      There will be massive homelessness like India and shantytowns. When I returned to the US in 2007 it was not just winos and crackheads but lower working class whites who were poor.
      Beggars will be everywhere.

I have never seen a promotion for rape on this site…for a person from Canada to accuse the author behind this site as promoting rape is a violation of the free speech parameters in Canada and should open this accuser to a legal proceeding that could be both criminal and civil, and a violation of Canadian laws. These people are subject to the same laws as the rest of us, and should be held accountable to false witnessing and accusations.
